Topsy-turvy weekend for MoJacks ty \\ 'and John Harman all 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 24, 1989 The Port Perry MoJlacks scored 20 goals in two games over the weekend, but had to settle for two points. Hoping to keep their six game un-defeated streak alive, the Cen- * tral Jr. C MoJacks clashed with the first place Chiefs in Lakefield Friday night, and when this goal- ies nightmare finally ended the score was 14-7 in the Chiefs fa- vour. Two nights later on home ice the MoJacks barely worked up a sweat as they pasted the last place Madoc Hurricanes 13-1. Against the Chiefs Friday 'night, the MoJacks found them- selves behind the eight-ball al- most from the opening faceoff as they were down 4-0. But they scrambled back into the fray with three fast power pla goals 1n under two minutes wi Troy Foster netting a pair and. John Harman grabbing the other. But the flood-gates opened in the second period with the Chiefs rapping in six markers to three for the MoJacks. Steve Durham, Thane Ellis and Warren Geer did the scoring. : 3 The third period was almost as bad as the first with the Chiefs hitting four more goals while Har- man responded for the MoJacks. The Chiefs used the smaller ice surface in Lakefield to full ad- vantage and the MoJacks had a ter- rible time trying to clear re- bounds. : On Sunday night in front of a very sparse crowd at the Scugog Arena, the Hurricanes showed up with just ten skaters and a goalie. Possibly the MoJacks were smarting a little from the loss Fri- day as they showed absolutely no mercy on the last place Madoc gang ey rolled to a 5-0 lead after one, and were leading 10-0 mid- way through the third when a care- less lapse allowed the Hurricanes to score their only goal, short- handed no less. MoJacks out-shot Madoc 52- 17 in this one and that was a pret- ty fair indication of the margin of play throughout. The third period looked like a scrimmage. Len Giacalone, Troy Foster ad two Frank Real Estate 2 _ Swamp 'Auto 1 Both Derek Carter and Steven Slade turned in excellent efforts in the nets as there were lots of end to end rushes with both being tested numerous times. Frank were able to hem Swamp in at times but were stymied by Steven Slade. Eric Grosvenor scored first for Frank when h. picked the bottom corner of the net from the " bottom of the face-off circle. With just one second remaining in the first period and Frank playing shorthanded Carl Payne picked up a loose puck at centre ice, deeked around the defence and scored. The game remained a tie until the ten minute mark of the third period when Eric Grosvenor took a pass from Chris Cooper and tucked the puck past the goal tender. Frank Real Estate 3 Emmerson Insurance 3 The competition has been tough goals, with singles to Steve Con- nors, Jeff Fitchett, Brad Menzies, Steve Durham, Greg Warriner, Derek Ellis, and Warren Geer. Durham, Warriner, Connors, Foster and Geer all had two assists and Fitchett had three helpers in this game. MolJacks took five minors and the Hurricanes had three. NOTEPAD: Next home game for the MoJacks is this coming Satur- day evening (Jan. 28) when the Bowmanville Eagles visit the Scugog Arena. All players with Port Perry Minor Hockey will be admitted free if wearing their team sweat- ers, and selected players will have a chance to test the MoJacks net- minders in a shoot-out between periods. With four weeks left in the regular schedule, the Central Jun- ior C League is on the "home stretch." The MoJacks have 11 sched- uled games left and possibly one or two make-up games with Lind- say Muskies. The next four games are "toughies" for the MoJacks as they travel to Wellington this Fri- day, host the Eagles the next night, then tangle with Ajax and - Trenton. In fact seven of the next 11 games are against teams higher in the standings than the Mo- Jacks. Barring some enormous col- lapse over those 11 games, the MolJacks are in line for a playoff berth (eight of the 11 teams get into post-season play) and with a strong showing down the stretch, the team still has good shot at . fourth, possibly third place which would mean home ice advantage in round one of the playoffs. The first place team has its pick of opponents from the teams which finish 5th to 8th place. Second place team picks second, etc., etc. ~ Game time this Saturday evening against the red-hot Bow- manville Eagles is 8:00 PM at the Scugog Arena. Jr. C crowds in Port Perry have been fickle so far this sea- son. Hopefully for the team, then: will be a good crowd on hand Sat- urday evening. Bantam League between these two teams all season and this game proved to be no exception. Again we were treated to some good fast hockey. Emmerson drew first blood when Vince Criscione teamed up with Troy Fisher and Peter Brock. Vince Criscione scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Neil Mark and Ross Stainton also scored his second goal of the game from Gerry Stevens. With 7 minutes remaining to play Frank pulled ahead for the first time of the game when Eric Grosvenor scored on a nice shot from inside the blueline. Adam Dantor tied the score with four minutes remaining on a pa from Peter Brock. : ing, ¥en Warren Geer, forward with the Port Perry MoJacks missed a scoring chance on this play Sunday at the Scugog Arena as the team hosted the Madoc Hurri- canes. But Geer and the MoJacks didn't miss too many other chances as they pelted the Madoc goalie with 52 shots and cruised to an easy 13-1 win. It was a topsy-turvy hockey weekend for the MoJacks as they scored seven against league leading Lakefield Friday. Only trouble was the Chiefs scored 14 of their own to hand the MoJacks their first loss In seven games.
