A PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 24, 1989 -- 27 Port Bantams looking to avenge first loss are back home at Scugog Arena hosting Cobourg, a 7:45 start. Come and catch some of the playoff action! The Port Perry Goreski Ban- tams have started playoffs this past week with 2 games, one ver- sus Cobourg and the other against Stouffville. On Wed. January 18, Port Perry hosted Cobourg in what seemed to be a very hot tempered game and also pitted Port Perry in the dumps. With a third of the team sick, Port Perry took to the ice with great emotion apd en- thusiasm. However, it was short lived, shortly after the opening face off Port Perry looked like a shambles on the ice. No matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't get things together. The puck was just not going into the net for Port Perry. However} Cobourg did the damage Port Perry did not want to see. Cobourg netted 8 goals to Port's 1 at the end of the game. Dan Sluggett scored Port's lone goal. Cobourg took the 1st game of the playoffs versus Port Perry and are 2 points up on Port Perry in points standing. For Port Perry, this game was supposed to be a beginning of some great hockey. The team now knows what it is going to take to win the first 2 rounds of playoffs if they want a shot at the cham- pionship. It'll take some good hard hitting, quick skating and lots and lots of "heart". From the opening whistle, they must come out flying and keep that pace for the duration of the game and never let up. In short, it'll take -a lot of discipline among the players as a team. On Saturday January 21, Port Perry hosted Stouffville in a high scoring match in favour of Port Perry. As the first period started, it was hard to believe that this was the Port Perry team that lost 8-1 to Cobourg. Port Perry "free'wheeled" this game, not- ching a shut out for goaltender Ray Doyle and running up the score in a 10-0 final. Stouffville _just couldn't break through the Port's defense and goaltender let alone get away from some great back-checking by Port's towards. Stouffville, like any other team looked frustrated and disap- pointed. However, they put up a good effort and did have a few scoring chances. Port Perry now put 2 points under their belt, but still trail Cobourg by 2 as Cobourg beat Stouffville in another game earlier in the week. It's hard to watch Port Perry move the puck like a successful, well-developed team in one game and then see things totally col- lapse in another. One thing's for Just no luck! The Stone Realty PeeWees travelled to Cobourg on Jan. 14 for a tournament. The first game of the day saw the boys come up against Wellington and this was a very close and exciting game.' Port jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Louis Whitfield, who . picked up a rebound, and Chad Garvock who finished off a nice passing play with Brent Harper and Jeremy Norton. Wellington fought back to tie the game but with a little over 2 minutes left Steve Desautels scored the win- ner with Todd Smart getting the assist. Ports second gaine was against the host team from Cobourg who also happen to be one of our playoff opponents. Cobourg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Steve Desautels scored twice in the second period to tie the game up. Todd Smart picked up assists on both of Steve's goals. Todd Smart picked up assists on both of Steve's goals. Cobourg regained the lead early in the third period but Brent Harper tied it at 3 with 31% minutes left. This win put the Stone gang in the finals against the Markham ma- jors. This game was fast moving and exciting with 'only one goal being scored, unfortunately the goal was scored by Markham 37 seconds into the game. The boys deserve credit for a fine effort and with a little luck could have come home with the championship.
