Picket lines at both high schools in Scugog Township were set up before 9:00 AM Monday. The teachers had set Monday morning as the date for a strike if a new contract was not reached. Provincial' mediator Doug Belch brought the two sides to- gether for a bargafing session last week, and s continued through the weekend and on Mon- day before the tentative settlement was reached. Although details won't be public until after ratificatioi by both sides, wages and class sizes were the two major issues be- iween the teachers and the Board. The District 17 of the OSSTF had been asking for 68 new teach- ers to be hired this year, along with a 6.1 per cent hike in salar- ies. The Board had offered to hire 40 new teachers over two ycars and increase wages 4.75 annually for the next two years. This was to be exam week for many of the 18,000 secondary stu- dents in Durham. Here in Scugog, reps at both PPHS and Cartwright HS said Monday that cxams would be re-scheduled once the strike is over and teachers return to work. Cartwright and PPHS wcre staffed by principals and vice- . principals on Monday. MYERS CASH & CARRY BULK FOOD & DAIRY STORE SPECIALS Salted or Unsalted.
