"Rol ) oe " ~ nh 4 it's no wonder these three girls are smiling--Andrea Rudy, Amanda Wakeford and Laura Phoenix all did well at the X-L banquet held recently. Just what Is X- L? See story and find out all about it. Nick Churchill won a trophy at the X-L banquet for his outstanding performance In wrestling. Scugog athletes shine on the X-L Club teams : (From page 18) Outstanding Tyke Boy in cross country. ' Amanda Wakeford was named Outstanding Mite Girl in cross country. Tommy Chambers and Carl Phoenix tied for Outstanding Tyke Boy in track and field. And Carl Phoenix and Melissa Rudy hit the big-time when they were awarded prestigious Athlete of the Year awards in cross coun- try (Carl) and track and field (Me- lissa). Tommy and Carl, coaches and teammates say, are the most inter- esting two runners to watch, whether they're competing in cross country or track and field. In one race, Tommy might pull / ahead; in another, Carl might win--at any rate, both of them are almost always ahead of the rest of the field. Carl doesn't actually train with the X-L Club--he gets all his help from coaches and teachers at Greenbank Public School (his sis- ter, Laura, does the same, al- though now she is a student at Cornish and trains with that school). He simply shows up at X-L Club meets and wows the competition. Tommy, on the other hand, practises twice a week with the Club at the Civic centre in . Oshawa. Saturdays are usually re- served for meets. All other sports in the club also practise at least once or twice a week. The problem, Andy Dyment says, for the more northern schools is transportation to prac- tise sessions. He would like the club to go "satellite" to enable Prince Albert by Ilean Pugh Well Prince Albert finally has it's own Ping Pong champions. Bev Stanley and Mark Lucus finally won out over several pairs after several months. Mark and Heather left last week to return to - Japan. So this leaves Bev to de- fend the title. Congratulations Bev. ' The weekly euchre had eleven tables on Thursday. The winners are as follows: Ladies - Doris Hill, Muriel Butson, Ruby Birkett; Men: Carl Gimblett, Ivan Cochrane, Joe McCashin. Lucky draws - George Harper, Ilean Pugh. Lone hand series.- Carl Gimblett with 20 lone hands. Sympathy is extended to the family of Herman Gray who pass-' ed away last Tuesday in Barrie. The Grays lived here for a number of years. Mac Christie, Ivan Parkinson and Earl Martyn attended the Shouldice Hospital Banquet at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Sat. night. This was the forty- second annual banquet. On Sunday Holy Communion was observed. The choir sang a lovely number under the leader- ship of Joan Lee who is organist for the next few months. Choir practice on Wed. evening at 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to join the choir. Sunday Jan. 29 will be the annual meeting after lunch. Remember pot luck lunch first. Bring your own dishes and silverware so the ladies do not have dishes to wash so that the meeting can start by 1:30 p.m. Please give Earline Armstrong a call at 985-7873 with your news next week. more athletes to get involved. The club is thinking about tak- ing on other school sports, espe- cially baseketball, but Dyment says it will never be involved in sports like hockey--which already have an intricate network set up in almost all communities. "We wanted to provide further competition for those sports in the school that really were not of- fered, per se, to the community at large," he said. Outside of the school there are teams in hockey, soccer and soft- ball for children to join--whereas there are not too many communi- ty track clubs or volleyball teams to sign up with, As for money, a small portion of funding comes from the Dur- ham Board of Education. It most- ly covers entry fees. The rest comes from bingo, 'held every Friday night at 7 p.m., downstairs at the Oshawa Centre. There is a $65 initiation fee for wrestlers, which pays for a uni- form, transportation, and entry fees. But Dyment admits nose fund- ing is nccessary. The next Interna- tional Youth Meet of Champions, for example, is in Kentucky, and money will be needed to pay for that trip. Dyment says the club is look- ing around for more funding and hopes it won't be a problem. Especially since so many peo- le in the sports business are ooking at the X-L system and Yondering why it is so success- ul. Dyment credits local school coaches and teachers with the club's success, as well as the de- termination of the athlethes them- selves. "They just run with a lot of heart and spirit," he says. "It's really inspiring. I just love being a part of it." For more information about the club, Andy Dyment can be reached at 655-8787. Seagrave area needs heart fund volunteers Seagrave and Area News by Ann Sandiford The fund raising for the "Heart and Stroke Foundation' is fast approaching.
