\ § -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 24, 1989 Letters Remember '} ¢ { } 3 1 Lighthearted cookbook is a winner To the Editor: I was pleased to read in last weeks Port Perry Star that the Heart & Stroke Foundation are selling The Lighthearted Cookbook by Anne Lindsay. oe are all concerned fosly about improving our eating habits through reducing our fat intake, cholesterol levels, sodium intake and calories, whether you are concerned about a heart condition or not. This cookbook enables you to do so with quick, easy and in- teresting recipes, utilizing foods you normally use or can find in the local grocery store. All the recipes I've tried have been winners for everyday cook- ing to entertaining, including en- tire menus. The book also contains com- prehensive information on substitutes and analysis of fast foods, hints on cooking for one, children, teens and seniors and suggestions to assist you in organizing your cooking for rush hour meals. Anne Lindsay, the author is a well known Canadian cook who has also written, Smart Cooking, for the Canadian Cancer Society. It is not only worthwhile to buy the cookbook to support the Heart & Stroke Foundation but the cookbook is excellent! Yours truly, Martha Larsen RR4 Port Perry P.S.: The cookbook can be pur- chased at From My Heart, House of Howard, Dor-Jean's and Carol's Cut and Curl for $14.95 with $7.00 going toward heart research. Regrets store closing To The Editor: It is with regret that the Opera- tion Scugog clothing store was obliged to close because of not be- ing able to find an alternate depot. As a volunteer I know how much this service is needed. There will be many disappointed mothers in Scugog as a result of this closure. Our store was too small to pro- perly display our wares and not as conveniently located as we would have liked. I am sure that if we were able to find a larger premises in a more convenient location this much needed service could be successfully resumed. Yours very truly, Second Debut Volunteer, Doris Grierson Article too harsh on Ben Johnson wrong; Ben the scapegoat of the future. Yes, Ben Johnson did tarnish his credibility, lost promotions and fans but he could not wreck the credibility of the Canadian track and field team. Something more had to be going on with the team for Ben to create such a stir that a beehive opened. Ms. Olliffe said that Ben "wrecked the credibility of 'Canada as a whole" and also "the man has no brains.' The credibility of Canada is intact as far as I am concerned. I and my family are not ashamed for Canada or ashamed to be Cana- dian. Canada is not one person and the results of his mistakes, our country is a nation of all peoples and one man's error can not destroy an entire nation in this sense. But it can and did open peo- ple's eyes. If Ben had no brains he would not be a great sprinter. Taking the risk of using steroids is not a matter of brains, he just took the risk of steroids showing in the urine testing. He made an error and was caught. How many other athletes were not? In February the truth will sur- face, lies confronted and the "scandal" climaxed. We will then know if Ben Johnson took the steroids knowingly or not. Though I wish Ben was innocent and When? I really think the one thing we have to remember and consider is that "Big Ben" is only human. What would someone else do if he/she were in Ben's sneakers? "Heart of Ice" was a well written piece. It's just that cruelty in children is a reality which not all people recognize or at least are willing to written with heart and style.
