26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 31, 1989 Back to back victories over tough opposition Sweet weekend for Jr. C MoJacks The Port Perry MoJacks con- tinued their strong late-season play as they won back-to-back games over the weekend against two of the tougher teams in the Central Junior C Hockey League. The MoJacks made the long trip to Wellington Friday evening and came home with an 8-6 win over the second place Dukes. And then Saturday night at the Scugog Arena in front of a good crowd, the team dispatched the Bowmanville Eagles 6-4 in a Playing (some of their best hockey to date this season, the Junior C MoJacks took four points over the weekend as they defeated two of the tougher clubs In the Central League. The MoJacks stopped Wellington 8-6, then tripped up Bowmanville 6-4. In photo above Thane Ellis deflects shot past Eagle goalle Scott Webster. Ellis had a hat trick In the game. (see story for detalls) haa wer bra 1 - contest on a goal by Harman, then chippy match that turned nasty at times. The pair of wins give the Mo- Jacks 36 points to date this sea- son. In their last ten games, the MoJacks have collected eight wins, one tie and one defeat. And they appear poised for a solid run at third or fouth spot in the stand- ings. In Wellington Friday night, the team was down 3-1 to the Dukes after the first period, but took advantage of some Duke pen- alties to fight their way back for the 8-6 win. Troy Foster clicked for a pair and Dean Smethurst, in his first game for the MoJacks this season, also had two in this one. Singles went to Warren Geer, Jeff Fitchett, Len Giacalone and Thane Ellis with-an empty netter. It was Smethurst who got the ame winner on the power play ate in the third period. Greg War- riner had a couple of assists in this one, and Jeff Lynch handled the goaltending chores. The MolJacks showed a lot of poise in this game, taking just seven minor penalties, while the Dukes took 13 minors, two mis- conducts, one fighting major and one game mis-conduct. On Saturday night against Bowmanville, the MoJacks got a three-goal performance from cap- tain Thane Ellis and two from for- ward John Harman for the 6-4 win. Len Giacalone added the oth- er. Ellis, who is making a habit of scoring spectacular goals, had a real gem in the first period. Kill- ing a penalty, he literally went end to end with the puck before tucking it under Eagle cage keeper Scott Webster. Trailing early in the second period 2-1, the MoJacks tied the It was Minor Hockey Night Sunday at the Scugog Arena as several young hockey playérs had a chance to "test" MoJack netminder Brad Bricknell between period of the game with Bowmanville. In photo above Leigh McClymont of the Tykes had a wide open net after Bricknell "sprawled" to try to make the stop. The kids had a good time "testing" the goalie went ahead on the power play as Ellis got his second of the game. With the MoJacks nursing a 5-4 lead and the outcome still in doubt late in the third, it was Har- man who put the cement on the ° victory. He scooped up a loose puck at the Eagle line, broke in alone and rifled a low shot that beat Webster cleanly. The Bowmanville netminder then left the crease to pounce on Harman who had been knocked to the ice after the goal. Webster was fortunate to come away with a double minor after leaving the crease to go after Harman. Give the MoJacks full marks for this victory in an ill-tempered game that threatened to get out of hand on several occasions. Jeff Lynch turned in a good game in net for his second win in 24 hours, and along the blue line, Chris Edmondson, Paul Barry and Chris Arsenault played with au- thority. Steve Fountain made his pres- ence felt on the ice, and during one stretch when the MoJacks were killing a double penalty, Fountain did a great job kecping the Eagles off the score-sheet. He tangled late in the game with the Eagles Brian Noble. Glen Campbell had three goals for the visitors. The MoJacks and Eagles won't meet again during the regu- lar season. In four outings, the MoJacks have won both on home ice and the two games in Bow- manville ended in ties. NOTEPAD: This is probably the most important (and difficult) week the MoJacks have in the schedule and likely will decide where they finish in the stand- ings. They start tonight (Jan. 31) against the Axemen in Ajax, make the long road trip to Trenton on Friday, pay a visit to Lindsay this Saturday and then host the Wellington Dukes on Sunday (Feb. 5) at the Scugog Arena for a 7:30 faceoff. That's four tough hockey games in six nights at a crucial time in the schedule. . It's nice to see Dean Sme- thurst in a MoJack sweater again. He played fine hockey for the team last season. A penalty kill- ing and defensive specialist with great wheels, he can also turn on the scoring touch, He's been playing for George Burnett this season at Seneca Col- lege, and he should be available full time for the MoJacks in the playoffs. When the MoJacks journey to Lindsay this Saturday evening, it will be their first game in the new Sports Complex, an impressive building with twin sheets of ice. Former MoJack John Hartford was in a Bowmanville uniform Saturday evening. uf If the two weekend wins over Wellington and Bowmanville don't give this team a big boost in' the confidence department, noth- ing will. Sportsland wins at Woodville On Sat. Jan. 28th the P.P. Sport- sland Juniors played in the 3rd Annual Woodville Junior Tourna- ment, winning all their games once again to win the Champion- ship. No gold medals were hand- ed out but they certainly deserv- ed them "What a Team!" Our first game against Wood- ville went into sudden death over- time for a win of 6-5. The winning goal was scored by Nicole Slack assisted by Cheryl Armstrong. A first for Port Perry -- only 2 penalties this game! Sportsland's second game was against Warkworth. This game was also counted as a league game so was a double win for us. The first goal was scored in the first 23 seconds of play and we kept our lead throughout the game winning 9-6. All girls played a hard fast game of Ringette with penalties kept to a minimum once again. This win put us into the Cham- pionship playoffs against the Markham Juniors. By the end of the first period the fans & coaches thought Markham had won as we were behind 6-2 and the girls look- ed beat. However the girls knew they couldn't give up and came back with a great second effort and won the Championship with a score of 8-6. Markham didn't know what hit them! Scoring for the tournament were: No. 1- Nicole Slack 2 goals, 1 assist; No. 5 - Danielle Lally 1 assist; No. 7 - Lisa Levy 9 goals, 3 assists; No. 8 - Terry Bell 1 assist; No. 11 - Nicki Beare 6 goals, 3 assists; No. 12 - Laurel Menzies 2 assists; No. 14 - Cheryl Armstrong 6 goals, 7 assists. Great work in the net Heather. With only 9 players the Sport- sland Juniors played excellent Ringette and all worked together as a team -- they should all be proud of themselves. Thank you to Rob Cooper and Jim Lawrence for great coaching & a special thank you to Jackie Little for fill- ing in on the bench. Sportsland Juniors now travel to the Ottawa Winterlude Tourna- ment to try for their 3rd Gold. Wish us luck! LOOKING FOR R PLACE TO RDUERTISE YOUR BUSINESS? LOOK HERE....
