Penalties swamp Tweens The Allen's Siding Products Tweens continued their playoff round by travelling to Don Beer Arena last Wednesday to meet a very competitive Pickering team. Unfortunately, our Port team caught a severe case of "'penalty- itis' and after eleven minutes of play were down six short-handed goals. Tracy in net and our four defencemen Kim, Kelly, Tanya & Jennifer were kept very busy in this period. During the second period the Tweens did recuperate and things looked better, but the Pickering goalie wasn't about to let us score many goals. Shannon Fox finally blasted one past the Pickering goalie assisted by Tanya Towns and Valerie Payne. Unfortunate- ly, that was all Port managed for the game. We'll meet Pickering again though during Provincial 'Prelims. in February. We've sur- prised them before and we're go- ing to do it again. Hang tough girls! On Jan. 27, the Allen's Siding Product Tweens travelled to Waterloo for a weekend tourna- ment. This was a step up for the girls as it was a Provincial AA tournament and Port is a Provin- cial A team. The Tweens didn't come away with a medal but they certainly were competitive and put forth a good effort. Five games of Ringette were played in total, quite a heavy schedule for one weekend. Game one began against Strat- ford, an old rival at 8 p.m. on Fri- day evening. Port came out strong and kept Stratford hustling for almost the entire game. Strat- ford only had a one goal lead un- til late in the second peirod when Port appeared to tire and Strat- ford popped in four quick goals. Final score 6-2 in favour of Strat- ford. Scoring for Port was Valerie Payne, unassisted and. Lori Buscher assisted by Karen Kett. Day two of the tournament began bright and early on the ice at 8 a.m. against the host team, Waterloo. From past experience we knew this would be a tough battle. There was hope though because Mr. Morden Phpeareq wearing his "lucky triple red" outfit, : Port took quite a few penalties in this game which certainly gave Waterloo the advantage. Tracy and Bristol were both strong in net stopping many hard shots but the Waterloo girls managed to sneak in 8 goals to Port's 2. Scor- ing for Port was Shannon Fox, assisted by Tanya Towns and Amanda Porter, assisted by Lori Buscher and Karen Kett. Who said that red was lucky anyway? For game three Port met a team from LaBelle Province - Beaconsfield, Quebec. These teams appeared fairly evenly matched but again Port suffered due to penalties. Strange too, dur- ing this game the hole in that lit- tle blue ring seemed to shrink to a size so small that the ringette sticks didn't appear to fit in the centre! This made controlling the game and scoring goals very difficult. Final score Beaconsfield 6, Port Perry 2. Credit for Port's two goals goes to Kim Poppleton assisted by Valerie Payne and Sara Wanamaker, unassisted. At 4:30 on Saturday aftérnoon the Allen's Siding Products Tweens changed arenas and sweaters and hit the ice to play their most exciting game of the tournament against Woolwich. Port came out flying! The goalies Bristol and Tracy were hot in net. The girls flew up and down that ice checking, passing and scoring, showing a great team effort and real determina- tion. A surprised Woolwich team found themselves down 6-3 at one jont during the game. Our bub- le burst in the second period though, as Port again troubled with penalties, saw Woolwich even the score. Then with barely two minutes left to play Woolwich pulled out all the stops and pumped in one more goal giving them the victory, 7-6 over Port. Great game girls! Now comes the problem. After searching high and low, this game sheet appears to be missing. Two of Port's goals were scored by Michelle Fitz- patrick, but after five games my memory fails me. Sorry girls, I'll check on this and credit the goal scorers next week. With the weekend quickly win- ding down, Port played their final game against Kitchener on Sun- day morning. Perhaps a little wearly from a busy weekend of activities, Port seemed to lack en- thusiasm as they skated onto the ice. Kitchener started the scoring early in the first period. Port rallied and got close at one point, but never quite caught up. They were robbed numerous times by a strong Kitchener goalie. At the final buzzer, Kitchener 6, Port Perry 3. Lori Buscher played well in this game scoring twice for Port assisted by Michelle Fitzpatrick and Kim Poppleton. Shannon Fox skated hard and netted Port's third goal assisted by Kim Pop- pleton again. This was a "fun" weekend for the Tweens. Our team is young and new to this division and we didn't expect to come out the big winners this time. The competi- tion was good, the experience valuable and we expect next year to be strong. Daily improvements can be seen - good work girls. Keep your spirits up and next year look out Waterloo because Port Perry will be awesome! See you all at 7 a.m. Sunday morning for a practice.
