The Port Perry Malmont Atoms were champions In their "home tournament" at the Scugog Arena Saturday. They defeated Huntsville 4-1 in the final game. The tournament was sponsored by Legion Branch 419 and John Christie pre- sented the trophy to captain Kenton LeFort. Ja MVP and received a plaque from -Pinerid pler, representing the Huntsville squad. At Port Perry tournament y King of the Atoms was game ge Sports. At right is captain Bob Pep- AToms strike for gold The 1st games of playoffs for the Atom #1 was Monday night when the Green Machine faced off against Stouffville. The 1st goal ~ for Stouffville was a penalty shot in the second period and before ¢ the period ended Stouffville had a 2-0 lead. With Matt Morris & Daryl Bourgeois away & Kenton LeFort sick Greg Thompson & Todd Parry were called up to fill the gaps. Todd & Greg combined in the 3rd period with Tim Fitz- patrick to put Port on the board with Greg picking up the goal. Nice work boys. Craig Laird tied the score at the end of the period- assisted by Bill Zaparanuik & Kirk Swain. Stouffville scored 1in the 3rd that ended a well played game Stouffville 3 Port 2. The Legion Branch 419 hosted an Atom & Peewee Tournament in Port Saturday and our home teams really came up big! Game 1 pitted Port's Atoms agains the Oshawa Bruins which turned out to be an excellent match-up. This was a fast skating game with Port having many chances but the Oshawa goalie kept them in the game. It wasn't until the 1 minute mark in the 3rd period that Port's Annual Rates Jay King used his incredible wrist shot to blast the puck between the pipes assisted by Craig Laird & Kirk Swain. The game ended 1-0. Ian Shrigley played net this game & earned a very well deserved shut-out! Game 2 saw Port facing off against a new opponent from Wexford. This was also a fast skating game but a much more aggressive one. Port Perry real- ly held their cool and frustrated their opposition by not retaliating. Keep it up boys! Port opened up the scoring in the 1st period as Jeremy Geer blasted the puck home assisted by Daryl 'Bourgeois. In the 2nd period Port upped the score to 3-0 as Tommy Chambers combined with Craig Laird & Sandy Mark then with less than 1 minute remaining in the period, Billy Zaparanuik rac- ed up the ice and rocketted the puck between the pipes assisted by Daryl Bourgeois & Ian McCready. Nice passing plays guys! Port's final goal of the game came in the 3rd period as Jay Tredway capitalized on a perfect pass from Kirk Swain this ended the game 4-0. Nice work Scotty! These 2 wins advanced Port into the champion- ship round against Huntsville. Port & Huntsville never had the chance to play one another when they were at previous tour- naments and what a shame because this game was one of the best I have seen in a long time. What made this game even better was that this was a totally penal- ty free game! Both teams focus- ed all their energy on playing Hockey. Port opened up the scor- ing on a beautiful line effort by * Kirk Swain, Kenton LeFort & Jay Tredway. It was Jay who tipped in the puck making it 1-0. Port boosted the score in the second perod with 2 more beautiful goals one by Jay King assisted by Jeremy Geer & Johnny Fitz- patrick. Jay Tredway then scored his 2nd of the night assisted by Jeremy. Then Jeremy made the score 4-0 from a scramble in front of the net. This time Daryl B & Tim F. picked up assists. Hunt- sville scored one at the end of the game ruining Port's perfect shut- out record. As the final buzzer went off Port Perry was crowned Champions after beating Hunt- sville 4-1. Congratulations boys! The M.V.P. of the game went to Jay King who played excellent on defence. Fabulous work team, you are #1. Sunday night the momentum continued as Port & Cobourg fac- ed off in the play-off series. The Green Machine came out flying. Cobourg scored 1st, but before the period ended Kenton LeFort tied the score assisted by Kirk Swain. Cobourg jumped into the lead in the 2nd period but Port answered back 3 times to take the lead 4-2 by the end of the period. Scoring for Port was Jay Tredway, Craig Laird & Tommy Chambers. Ad- ding with assists were Sandy Mark 2, Craig L., Tommy C. & Jay K 1 each. As the 3rd period unfolded Port continued to apply pressure but midway through the period Cobourg scored 2 quick goals & tied the score 4-4. The game ended with a tie giving each team 1 point. Scot Pretchitko guarded the Port Perry net and he was absolutely superb stoning the opposition at every move. Outstanding game Scot. The Green Machines next game is F'ri- day at home, 8 p.m. against Stouffville Good Luck! in the A team from the Port Perry Curling Club competed Ontarlo BASF Canadian Farmers Curling Championship held Jan. 20-22 at the Sydenham Community Curling Club in Wallaceburg. Lumbermen nail On Saturday, January 28, the Scugog Lumber team travelled to Manvers Arena, to take part in their tournament. The boys played three games, and the com- petition was stiff, but they manag- ed to bring home the consolation prize. In the first game, Scugog played against Kingsview, an Oshawa team. The first period saw one goal by Kingsview, put past Ian Johnston. The second period two goals were scored by Kingsview in a short time, but Scugog didn't give up, and Jon Jamieson assisted by Jason Hopkins opened up the scoring for Scugog. In the third period Kingsview was leading by a score of 5-1, and with 49 seconds to go, Matt Brown assisted by Jon Jamieson and Richard Kernohan scored again for Scugog. Final score 5-2 for Kingsview. In the second game, Scugog met a team from Manvers. Manvers opened up the scoring in the first period and were ahead by 2-0 until Matt Brown unassisted scored for Scugog. This goal gave down consolation Scugog the drive they needed. In the second period, Jon Jamieson assisted by Jason Hopkins and Matt Bengel tied the score. Matt Brown assisted' by Steward Bruce and Chris Drury put Scugog ahead. With only 27 seconds left in the game, Matt Brown again unassisted put a quick goal past the Manvers goalie, and Scugog won 4-2. This win put Scugog in the con- solation game. The final game saw Scugog meet St. Gertrudes. Halfway into the first period, Matt Brown assisted by Jon Jamieson opened up the scoring. Late in the first period Matt Bengel assisted by Matt Brown and Richard Kernohan scored "again for Scugog. In the second period Troy Anderson assisted by Stewart Bruce made the-score 3-0 for Scugog. St. Gertrudes manag- ed to get on the score sheet late in the second period, and again in the third. Final score 3-2 for Seugog. Jon Jamieson was selected as the player for putting forth\the best effort for Scugog. Swampers win it 3-0 in O.T. The B&R Swampers faced off against Goreski's in the first broomball game last Sunday night. Both teams fought hard to a 0-0 regular game tie which sent the game into a five minute over- time period. The Swampers dominated this period wtih three unanswered goals. Pomeroy accounted for two goals as well as an assist. Scott Heard received credit for 2 assists. Mike Mole scored a goal and received an assist. In the next game Emmerson"s Insurance went up against the league leading Utica Farm Equipment = team. Utica Brian. aominated the game with a 5-0 win. Goals were scored by Ken Lynde, Greg Gibson, John Schell and Dave Dickson with two. Assists went to Murry Down, Kevin Ibbitson, Ian Down, Mark Lee, Jack Monsma and Greg LePine with two. The Blackstock Merchants took a quick lead when Tom Wotton scored from a Kevin Grieve pass. B&L Donuts tied the game late in the first period when Eric Kristensen was assisted by John Green.
