The new agreement was rati fied by the high school teachers last Fnday. The pact calls for a salary in- crease of 4.8 per cent, effective to last September 1, and a further 4.9 per cent in the second year of the contract. These increases will provide ley ranges for teachers from $27,200 to $56,275, and from $68,390 to $74,700 for princi- pals. The new contract also calls for the hiring of 25 more teachers for this coming September and 20 more the following September to reduce the pupil/teacher ratio from 15.7:1 to 15.5:1 The new contract was ham- MN . - mered out Jan bargaining with provincial mediator. High school teachers across the Region had walked off the job that day on a legal strike to back their demands. The Durham Board of Educa- tion issued a statement Friday not- ing that the new contract will cost the Board $3.6 million this year and $4.8 million in 1990, On thorny issue of staff- ing levels, the Board says the Teachers Federation will have 23 after lengthy assistance of a greater input into staffing, and there will be "more of a co- operative effort between the Board and the Federation."
