At 23, some might say she is young to hold such a responsible position, but Mary Lynne has ex- perience, enthusiasm, and plenty of new ideas for her new job. She started January 2 i Len Green), after leaving the Oshawa Syndenham Museum, where she was secretary/designer. "Really, I was assistant to the director," she explained in an in- terview with the Star. "I was in- volved in a lot of different aspects of museum work." Her interest in museums and lo- cal history began when she was a summer student working at a mu- seum in Brantford, where most of her family still lives. "That's where I first developed my interest and love of mu- seums," she said. Her father, an employee of On- tario Hydro, was transferred a great deal, and Mary Lynne found her- self living in places like Port El- gin, and, surprisingly, South Ko- rea. "It was a good experience," she said simply about the two years she spent there. Her time in South Korea helped her decide to study International Correction A page ten ad in the Jan. 24 issue of the Port Perry Star listing supporters of the Hospital Build- ing Fund contained an error. Mary Lynne is particularly hap- py to be working in a "small town." "I love small towns. I love small town life. That's pretty ° much what drew me to Port Per- ry," she said. "And I really was impressed by the museum. I liked the dedication of the people con- nected to the museum." She was also happy to see Scu- gog's strong sense of local histo- ry. Already she has plans to culti- vate this sense, and has written a report of ideas she wants to work on. With the help of museum tour coordinator Carol Fagel, she hopes to expand educational ser- vices to include outreach to local schools. Along with the present visits school children make to the museum, Mary Lynne and Carol want to visit classrooms, armed . with AV materials, videos and " i loads of local history information. She also would like to make minor adjustments to existing museum displays, as well as add new displays, especially tempo- rary ones. ir. From April to the end of July, Lynne has booked an an- tique clock collection, owned by Earl Pascoe of Whitby, who re- stores as well as collects. She says he will be conducting work- shops for the public on how to do clock repairs. : And she's already planning a new Christmas program for next year, for both the public and schools. "It will be themed as a 'Settler's Christmas',"" she said, with events like sleigh rides, special exhibits, tours, and the printing of Christ- mas cards with the museum's printing equipment. In a nutshell, she says, "We're taking what already exists and just expanding it." bi 2 > F Ta Mary Lynne Williamson Is the new curator at Scugog Shores Museum and she's got plenty of enthusiasm and new Ideas to try out.
