Sportsland Juniors strike gold in national capital On February 3, the Sportsland Juniors and their families travell- ed to Ottawa to play Ringette at the Winterlude, and came home with gold. We played our first game Fri- day night at Tom Brown against Dorchester. This game was close but our girls held their own. The final score was 6-5 for Port. Scorers were: Lisa Levy 3, Cheryl Armstrong 2, Denna Lovering 1, assists: Sylvia Durward 4, Lisa Levy 1 and Cheryl Armstrong 1. On Saturday we woke up to freezing cold weather. After a hot breakfast at the Dill Pickle we headed back to Tom Brown to meet a team from Ottawa. The girls came out flying, the Ottawa team didn't know what hit them. Our girls won this game with a 10 - 3 score. Scorers were: Danielle Lally 3, Lisa Levy 2, Nicole Beare 1, Cheryl Armstrong 3, and Den- na Lovering 1. Assists: Cheryl Armstrong 4, Denna Lovering 1, Laurel Menzies 2, Lisa Levy 1, and Terry Bell 1. Our third game was played at Walkley Arena. We played a team from Clarence. This game was one our team and fans will never forget. Our girls played great against this very chippy team. We Midget Eagles open playoffs Hockey playoff action at the Scugog Arena will heat up this weekend with several important games. On Friday evening (Feb, 17) the Midget Eagles will open a best of five all-Ontario quarter fi- nal series against a tough team from Kingston Township. Faceoff for this one is 7:00 PM. Immediately following that game the Port Juveniles tackle Trenton in game one of the best of seven playoff, getting underway at 9:00 PM. - On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Pee Wee Legionaires will take on rival Cobourg at 4:00 PM, and at 7:30 that evening, the Malmont Atoms will host Cobourg for playoff ac- tion. If you can't make it to any.of the above games, the Midget Ea- gles will host Kingston Township on Sunday afternoon at the Scu- 80g Arena with faceoff slated for 12:30. Atom House League Tripp 5 Lions 2 With this victory Tripp moved within 1 point of the second place Lions and 4 behind front running Scugog. Matt Phoenix was again the big gun for Tripp as he scored 3 and assisted on 1. Matt scored the only Goal of the first period assisted by Chad Mitchell and Steve Cochrane. Matt scored his second, this one assisted by Johnathan McCourt. Chad Mitchell then put Tripp up 3-0 when he took a perfect pass from Jamie Ervine. Scott Prechitko got the Lions first goal assisted by Colin Outram. Matt got his hat trick early in the third assisted by Chad Mitchell and Jason Robin- - son. The Lions kept coming and Matt Phillips scored assisted by Scott Prechitko and Eric Vetter. Steve Cochrane rounded out the scoring when he found the net assisted by Matt Phoenix. Whitby 6 ' Lewis 4 Whitby moved within 3 points of second place with this hard fought win. Darren Kinnunin was the big Eagles coach Doug Scott said recently the quarter final match-up between his squad and Kingston Township promises to be a good one. The teams met once this year in a tournament with Kingston coming out on top 4-2. Kingston apparently has a very large and rugged blue line corps and first rate netminding. And the Midget Eagles will have to contend with a two week layoff since they ousted Cobourg in three straight games January For the Juveniles, the series with Trenton is their first taste of playoff action so far this season. And the Junior C MoJacks are also in action this weekend at the Scugog Arena as they host Ux- bridge Sunday night at 7:30 for a joague game that means a lot to both clubs in the scramble for 'playoff positions. scorer in this match as he netted 4 and assisted on 1. Whitby scored 4 times in the first period. Darren got them underway assisted by David Kemp and Ryan Diceman. Jason Brown then connected, assisted by Steven Hiemstra and Mark Turnbull. David Kemp and Ryan Morton then set up Darren for his second of the period. Steven Hiemstra put Whitby up 4-0 with Darren and Jason Brown helping out. Lewis never gave up and with Jason Vader scoring assisted by Chris Vandermeer and Jeremy Stevens, then Matt Baxter from Kristen Wootton and Tony Waldriff cut the lead to 4-2 heading into the final period. Dar- ren then scored 2 quick goals for Whitby to take some of the momentum out of Lewis. His third goal was assisted by Ryan- Morton and Gord Bently, his last goal was unassisted. Lewis then scored 2 goals, Jason Vader from Bobbie Cracknell, then Justin Wootton assisted by Kristin Woot- ton and Scott Swain. Whitby then hung on in the last couple minutes to pick up the win. out skated and out passed them in both periods. We got the lead and never looked back. The score end- ed up 6-1 for Sportsland. This put us in the medal round on Dows Lake. Scorers for this game were: Nicole Beare 3, Cheryl Armstrong 1, Lisa Levy 1, and Laural Men- zies 1. This was Laural's first goal of the year, - Congratulations again! The championship game was held on Dows Lake right in the middle of Winterlude. As the girls kept warm in the trailers the parents walked or skated up and down Dows Lake trying to keep warm. Finally at 2:30 p.m. the game was about to start with Port Perry playing Oshawa for the I" Gold. Oshawa got on the score board first, then Port came back in the second period to get 2 more goals but it was a little late. The score ended up 6-4 for Port Perry. We brought home the Gold! Scorers were: Lisa Levy 2, Cheryl Armstrong 3, and Denna Lover- ing 1. Assists: Nicole Beare 1, Lisa Levy 2 and Sylvia Durward 2 There is one person we can't forget about, who played great in the 4 games. She is our goaltender Heather Lawrence. Super job, Heather! I would like to thank the girls, coaches and especially all the parents. It was a great, fun weekend of Ringette. (Thank-you Petite parents for cheering for us!) Next games are Saturday at the Scugog Arena at 6:30, and Sunday at 3:30 in Warworth (Play Offs). The team has travelled as far away as Markham, Ajax, Bramalea, South Hampton, Buffalo, rough. Presently there are 15 active members, right) and his wife Donna. The club practices every Tuesday and Thursday at Im.- maculate Conception Catholic School (for Information Port Perry YMCA office).
