28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 14, 1989 Playoffs start for broomball This past Sunday saw the final games of the regular season played in the P.P.B.A. and now the top four teams will get ready to do battle in the playoffs. In the first game of the day B&L Donuts tripped up Emmerson's by a score of 3-1. Brian Mikkelsen supplied the major fire power as he notched 2 for B&L with the re- mainder going to Terry Black. John Schillings and Mark Graham picked up the assists. The lone Emmerson's tally came from the broom of Charlie Dennis. Neither of these two teams will be moving on in post season play. The middle game of the after- noon had first place. Utica shut out B&R Electric 4-0. Kevin Ib- bittson started things off scoring two in a row for the winners. The next two were split between Ken Lynde and Dave Dickson. Jack Monsma and Ian Down supplied a pair of assists each, with singles going to Dickson, Greg Lepine, Chester Down, and Mark Lee. Mark Mason Recorded his 13th shutout of the season. In the final showdown of the day Blackstock blanked Goreski"s 3-0 in a game that had to go into over- time. At the end of regulation time the score was 0-0 and just 36 seconds in the overtime frame Tom Wotten set up Ron Redman for the first tally. Redman then scored another, this time getting help from Ron Short with Bill Pratt marking the last goal unassisted. Rick MacLean, in the nets for Blackstock, and Goreski's Ray Gibson both put in fine performances in not allowing any go by them. Next week marks the start of the playoffs for the top four teams. Game times and op- ponents are as follows: Utica will be home to Goreski's at 4:00 p.m. and at 5:00 p.m. B&R will be visiting Blackstock. The score was tied at two after the first period with Chris Langford and Jeffrey Neal for the Blue Jays and Scott Brownson 'and David Halward for the Red Wings. In the second period, Chris Langford scored twp more goals for the Blue Jays, to earn his hat trick, while Lyle Defoe assisted by getting one goal. For the Red Wings, Darryl Dalton scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, while Gregory Langford assisted by getting their only goal in the third period. In the third period, Jeffrey Neal, Evan Bertrand and Stephen Nagy each scored a goal for the Blue Jays. Raven Ward and Adam Youmans shared the goaltending for the Blue Jays while Kevin Duncan made many saves to keep his team, the Red Wings, in the game. In intermediate action, it took a minute and half in sudden death overtime for the Green Gators to beat the Red Razors by the score -of 8 to 7. Jamie Sauter scored the winning goal which was his se- cond for the night. The Red Razors had to score four goals in the tnira period to tie up the game and force the over- time period. Other scorers for the Green Gators were Steven Elliott with two, Kevin Pike with two, David Verschuuren one and Jamie Ir- vine one. Denis Goodman and Adam Jones each scored three goals for the Red Razors, to earn themselves hat tricks, while Aaron Stiller scored the tying goal. In senior action, the White Knights beat the Blue Racers by the score of 8 to 7 in the sudden death overtime. Brad Lemieux scored the win- ning goal for the White Knights which was his second for the night that was set up by a good pass from Kevin Pearce. Ross Stainton scored the tying goal in the dying seconds of the game to force this game into the sudden death over- time period. This was Ross' third goal of the game, earning his hat trick. Other scorers for the White Knights were Mike Pothier with two and Danny Brown with a lone goal. For the Blue Racers, Blair Prechitko was sitting in front of the net to put four goals past the Knight's goaltender. Other scorers were Wade Sheedy with two goals and Mike Tripp with one. Sixteen teams from the Port Perry Curling Club participated in the Royal Bank Bonsplel last Saturday at the local curling club. Competition was keen all day, and the winning rink was skipped by Bruce Peters. Above, Bert Hutcheon, left, bonsplel chairman, represented the Royal Bank and presented the trophy to Bruce and his team members, Jannette Peters, Karen and Ted Rivett. The annual Luke's Country Store Ladles Bonspiel was held February 8 at the Port Perry Curling Club with a team from Unionville emerging as the winners as the outcome was in doubt until the final stone of the final game. J and D rubs Sportsland The first game of the day was a realblowout as J&D Carpentry "hammered" Sportsland 8-1, after Sportsland scored first. Capitalizing for J&D were Brad Hurst - 3 goals, 1 assist, Ken Lit- tle - 3 goals, Dave Harrison - 1 goal, 1 assist, and Brian Callery - 1 goal. Adding assists were Carl Durward 4, Terry Flieler, Mike Fitzgerald, Joe Curran, Ron Hoogeboom, Mike Adam, Carl Fitzgerald, and Dennis Lycett all with one. The lone marker for Sportsland was Dave Bourgeois from Ray Zaparaniuk and John Foster. The pace slowed down in game two as Blanchard's Supply Co. defeated Compton Cable T.V. 4-2. Scorers for Blanchard's were Al Bonner - 1 goal, 1 assist, Dan Carty, Jim Duncan, and Dan Horner with the others. Helping out were Ron Zaparaniuk - 2 assits, Don Card, Kevin Reid, Mark Jobb and Marvin Stevenson - 1 apiece. Scoring for Compton were Kel- ly Lee from Ron Compton and HenryForderer, and "Doc" Thomson from John Wood- ward and Brian Samis. The third game saw Anderson's defeat first place Larocque Elec- tric 4-2. Counting for Anderson's were Doug Bronson - 2 goals, Denzil Ir- ving - 1 goal, 1 assist, and Dick Martin - 1 goal. Other assists to Terry Rose and Neil Crouter. Fighting for Larocque were Tim Kane - 1 goal, 1 assist, Dave Mann - 1 goal, George Gladish, Bart Wager, and Bob Lee with 1 assist each.
