"Allens Siding Products" at- tended their last tournament of the season over the weekend in Gloucester, and stayed in downtown Ottawa. The storm that gave freezing rain to Port Perry, gave snow and ice pellets to Ot- tawa and slowed down our travelling somewhat, but did not ~ slow down the fun. From skiing to skating, and sight-seeing to shopping, all en- joyed themselves for the second year in a row. This year the tour- nament had 105 teams entered and over 1500 players competing, from Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and North Vancouver. The girls had a great time, and made some new friends, and met some old ones. One young fellow Ajax felled by Port in play-off series (From page 28) or the power play and once again it was Fountain setting things up. His shot beat Stabile and was rol- ling near the goal-line when John Harman got his stick on the puck to tap it home. Jeff Lynch got his second start in the cage for the MoJacks, fac- ing 25 shots. The MoJacks did a thorough checking job in the final period, holding the visitors to just five shots on goal, while firing 13 at Stabile. This was a chippy game with the Axemen taking 14 minors and the MoJacks 12. And players on both teams spent a lot of time yapping at each other between whistles. Kris Lavereau, who is seeing limited ice time on the MoJacks defense, played well when called on by coach Ken Harman, and nearly had himself a goal in the third as his hard shot just whistled by the goal post. . Bill Lawgenson also had a - strong game and did some fine fore-checking in the Ajax zone. For the Axemen, Bill Pass- field had two goals and an assist. While the MoJacks havc giv- en up several power play goals, the penalty killers have been very busy and they are one reason why the team is leading this series. Lawrenson, Warriner, Fitchett and Smethurst are logging a lot of ice in short-handed situations. Len Giacalone suited up for Sunday's game, but saw no action as he is still nursing a bad leg. But he'll be back in the near fu- ture. If the MoJacks win tonight's game in Ajax, they'll have a few days rest waiting for their next playoff round opponents, either Uxbridge or Wellington. Those teams arc decad-locked at two games each, as the Bruins defeated the Dukes 7-4 on Sunday. , Lakefield whipped Liule Brit- ain 8-3 on Sunday night to go ahead 3-1 in that series and the Bowmanville Eagles ousted Tren- ton in four straight games. If the Axemen win game four tonight, the next game will be Wed. March 8 in Port Perry with faceoff set for 8:00 PM. The burning question is 'Will Renee still be there next year?" Valerie, Kendra, Kelly and Shannon enjoyed a Friday night skate in the Rideau with the coach and his son, and waited for the coach every few hundred yards, as he seemed to be chugging behind. At the end, everyone en- joyed a fresh beaver tail, right out of the deep fryer, covered in icing sugar and cinnamon. The coach was then assisted back to the hotel and put to bed. Saturday afternoon brought about one of the wildest fashion shows ever to take place. Everyone was gathered in the board room and Richard Parlia- ment was at the head of the table holding court. In they came, one after the other, with bags and parcels full of last minute items that had been picked up at the mall. It was explained to us that "Everything was on sale, and therefore they actually saved money." Even Mrs. Fox and Mrs. . Morden got caught up in the ex- citement and just had to pick up a little something. (Wayne has promised never to miss another tournament.) The swimming pool was used extensively and the halls were always buzzing with little feet scurrying along. By the way, the "Siders" did play four games of ringette on Friday and Saturday against Cumberland, Stratford, Nova Scotia and Gloucester. Michelle Fitzpatrick got 2 goals, Kim Pop- pleton got one, Valerie Payne one and Shannon Fox one. Some hard work was done by Amy Parliament, Lori Buscher and Kelly Menzies to set up these goals. Tracy Pelow and Bristol Sleep shared the goal tending duties and did admirable jobs, considering the strong teams we were play- ing. Tanya Towns, Jennifer Morden, Kim Poppleton, and Kel- Novices lose to Stouffville ~ The 'Pearce Auctioneers" were eliminated from the playoffs on Fri. March 3rd by suffering a 5-0 defeat by Stouffville. That game gave Stouffville their third win to attain the 6 points they needed to capture the series. Although the playoffs may be finished for the "Auctioneers" they still have three tournaments to compete in with their first one this weekend in Cannington. They will also have an exhibition game on Fri. March 10th, in Port Perry at 7 p.m. We wish them luck! Sports Land 985-2174 NEW BIKE purchase this spring?? TRADE-IN your old bike! PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 7, 1989 -- 29 Port Allen Tweens take Ottawa by storm ly Menzies gave them a lot of help as they played their usual strong defense, and took a couple of turns on the forward line. Sara Wanamaker also did some good checking as did Kendra McCrae and there were a few times that these girls killed off penalties for us. The girls did manage a victory on Saturday evening as they scored a convincing win over the men, in a game of 'Pictionary.' They received some good support from the mothers, and the fathers, who assisted by the sons, just were not equal to task. This brings our season to a close and although it was not as successful on paper as everyone would have hoped, the girls always provided good competi- tion for opponents, and it was suc- cessful as far as the girls develop- ing new skills, learning sport- smanship and above all, having "fun," for that is the key word in the ringette code. We would like to thank our sponsor, 'Allens Siding Pro- ducts' for their support and assistance through-out the year, and we can honestly say we did our best to make your name one to be recognized and respected. Thank-you to the assistant manager, Margot Fitzpatrick, for a job well done, and to asst. coach Wayne Fox for time spent with the team. The biggest thank-you goes again to manager Marg Pelow, for without her, the ring would not slide as smoothly. Thank-you to the parents for your patience and time spent in going to games, practices and tournaments, and for making them "fun." Be sure to tune in next year, when the "Allens Siders" return in quest of another Provincial ti- tle, and the burning question will be answered "Is Renee still in the Hayloft?" Sno-ball tourney fun On Feb. 25, Trader Sam's held their first annual Sno-ball tourna- ment and Mother Nature was kind enough to lend a helping hand. For the most part a good time was had by all. Some people, however, took things a bit too seriously. Remember folks, there was snow on the ground. The idea was to get out and have some fun. Get in the spirit(s) of things. In the finals we had a hard fought battle that was won 1-0 by the Guzzlers. Darryl's Dipps played a good game, but their of- fence deserted them in the finals. Third place went to Ajax Aces. The organizers wish to Thank Trader Sams for hosting the tour- nament and Thanks to all the teams who participated. oe i | 650 scuGoa sT., i PORT PERRY | Willy & Son Small Engine 985-3192 air) Ni YF ES EE EE
