Found joy in music Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader at 9:45 a.m. for the usual Church Service. 10 ladies of the "Head" U.C.W. met last Wednesday evening at PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 7, 198y -- 5) for donations made to Operation Scugog at Christmas time and an explanation of the ac- complishments in different areas. Some of you have had the pleasure of hearing the musical "Golden Slippers" group, com-_ prised of 14 men and women, many of whom are retired but have found joy in getting together with a variety of instruments and producing concerts in various areas, such as nursing homes, churches, the Island Hall and for other benevolent groups. They do not charge but of course a dona- tion is always appreciated to help defray expenses. Their next ap- pearance will be at the Island United Church, Sunday, March 12 There were also letters from Denise House re: a dinner to raise funds, and one from Marine Land. Many beautiful pieces of crafts were brought in for sale at*'Bon- nie's Boutique" at the newly nam- ed "Country Cooking" & Craft the home of Mrs. Helen Redman. Of course the study was based on Easter & entitled, 'Butterflies are Free." With correspondence, a lovely letter was received from Barbara Carnegie expressing appreciation CONTRACTORS & CARPENTERS ALUMINUM CONTRACTORS WEDDING INVITATIONS and Accessories PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Port Perry 985-7383 ib "PORT PERRY ROOFING Asphalt * Cedar Shakes *Flats * Sheet Metal *Woodruf Rustic *Gerard Roofing Tiles REPAIRS - STRIPS - RE-ROOFING - NEW WORK (416) 985-7082 RON VORINS CONSTRUCTION CHURCHILL "® HAULAGE «& Sand -- Gravel -- Limestone -- Backhoe Service -- Tomes = 985-8818 Sales & Installation JOHN REEKIE RICK PATTERSON 985-0962 ADDITIONS -- DECKS -- GARAGES LOG HOMES SALES OFFICE wane 986-4215 wesrieron 434-0751 vse - PATTERSON & CRAWFORD - DRYWALL SERVICES BOARDING -- TAPING -- TEXTURED CEILINGS Workmanship Guaranteed RON CRAWFORD 985-3700 Scug0S OVERHEAD DOOR CO. ' LE EEE EE NEE EEE EEE Golden Slippers entertain at Island United Sale, Sat. Apr. 22. There will also be craft demonstrations and a showing of special crafts by several people. More attractions may be added such as penny draw & lunch tables. Of course "Country Cooking" means a sale of baked goods. We learn that the '"'Grace" U.C.W. will have their usual lun- cheon the same day. The "Head" ladies are planning a bus trip for Apr. More informa- tion later. Again Helen Redman has the responsibility of planning this as she does such a good job. Wedding catering has been agreed upon for May 1990. May 28 will be arranged for a U.C.W. Service at the Island United Church. Presbyterial will meet at Brooklin March 9. Bring your own mug for coffee to avoid use of styrofoam. The Couples Club of the Island United have their plans made for Sat. Mar. 11. Everyone will meet at 8 p.m. at the Centennial Bowl- ing Lanes. After an evening of fun, all will go to the home of Karen & Reg. Davis for refreshments. The "Grace" U.C.W. met at the church last Wed. evening with a good number present. A highlight of the evening was a demonstration by Pat Taylor's neighbour when she showed the members how to make fancy cushions from purchased materials. Recently I was asked to com- pile information of a' Pioneer family. This took me back to scraps of information gathered at the time of the "Head Memorial" Church Centenary in 1960 when there was a 3-day celebration. This also took me to the Guest book of that period where I found names from Toronto, Oshawa, Burks Falls, Enniskillen, Brooklin, Barrie, Goodwood, Dun- barton, Willowdale, Beeton, Seagrave, Prince Albert, Burketon, Peterborough, Agin- court, Manchester, Whitby, West Guilford, Bowmanville, Hamp- ton, Little Britain, Blackwater, Paw Paw, Ill.,, Thessalon, Ux- bridge, Pickering, Columbus, Nestleton, Estevan, Sask., Port Perry. Then came the Dedication of the beautiful monument 13 years later and brought more peo- ple from Vancouver, Orangeville, Seagrave, Sunderland, Green- bank, Palm Springs, Calif., Can- nington, Agincourt, Etobicoke, as well as the former places. As I scanned the names that were familiar I learned that at least 80 of those people who shared our joys have now passed on. Now, the '"Head Memorial" Church is serving a new purpose as part of the Museum complex and hundreds of people from a large area pas through its doors to see and learn of the past. We also learn that there are plans for expansion. Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow and.her sister returned Saturday night from a 2 week trip to the S. Western States. Our partial infor- mation was a very good time. We do not know how many ple are in Hospital from the Island presently. But we do know Allen Aldred is there and we trust he will soon be able to return home again. This Spring month is a favourite for birthdays like: Jan. Gerrow, Pat Fulcher, Helen Red- man, Clifford Redman, Lavern Martyn, Elsie (Reader) Angus, Grace Love, John Beckett, Reta Reader. Should your name be here? AE RAR A EE ENE EEN
