I ad a a 30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 21, 1989 Utica prevails in broombadll The broomball season in Port Perry finally drew to a close on the weekend, with Utica repeating as Champions as they defeated Blackstock in a squeaker 4-3. Blackstock grabbed the lead first early on in the game as Wayne McGuigan fed Steve Hawes. The situation was short lived however as Utica came back quickly and struck for two to take over the lead. These goals came from the sticks of Dave Dickson and John Schell with Mark Lee and Bart Wagar draw- ing the assists. Blackstock's Bill Pratt tied it up on an assist from Cordell Keuning. Before the period had ended Utica again took the lead when Dickson assisted on Ken Lynde's marker. Both teams traded goals late in the second period with Utica striking first with Dickson not- ching his second of the game with Lynde assisting. Blackstock made it close, coming within one when Rick McLean and Gord Bryans set up Tom Wotten for the last goal of the affair. Name Dickson D. Ut. 5 Wotten T. Blk. 4 McGuigan Blk. 2 Down M. Port Perry's first game was on March 11 against Niagara Falls. Port Perry played rather well throughout the first 2 periods which resulted in a 4-2 lead for Port heading into the third. However, Port Perry could not hold the Niagara Falls team back from their comeback which saw Niagara Falls take the lead 54. Port Perry, however, fought back and tied the game 5-5 which was the final score. Scoring for Port Perry were: Jeff Parry (2), Jason Cochrane, Jason McBride and Steve Staniland. Drawing the assists were: Steve Staniland, John En- nis, Steve Laird, Jason McBride, Jason Cochrane (2) and Jod Logan. Port Perry's next game was against a team from Stratford on Monday, March 13. The Port Perry squad came out to win this game and win they did. A 6-1 victory with '"'out-of- retirement" coach, Hillis Wilbur. The game was filled with hits and nifty plays. The Port d show- ed their talent well and deserved the victory that was chalked up. Scoring for Port were: John En- nis (2), Jeff Parry, Steve Staniland and Dan Sluggett (2). Drawing assists were: Steve Laird (3), Jeff Parry (3), John Ennis, Todd Taylor, Jason Towns and Jody Logan (2). With the win over Stratford, Port moved into first place on their half of the "C" division. The semi-final for the "C'" division championship was decided bet- ween East York and Port Perry on Friday, March 17. This game was a runaway for Port Perry who took the championship §-1. However, this game got out of hand and saw unnecessary violence. In one incident, an East York forward. and Port Perry defenceman Chris McLeod were sent to the penalty box with minor penalties. However, the East York player thought Port Perry needed alittle punishment for the penalty and skated face to face with McLeod, raised his stick and came straight down on his head. The East York player was then restrained and tossed from the game with a gross misconduct. The game was chippy, but Port did not retaliate with stupid penalties. Instead, they retalliated with scoring punch. Scoring for Port were: Steve Staniland (2), Jeff Parry (3), Jason McBride (2) and Brett Puckrin. Drawing assists were: Jeff Parry, Brett Puckrin, Steve Laird, Steve Staniland, John En- iy Todd Taylor and Jan Heyes (2). After the win over East York, Port Perry was in the champion- ship of the "C" division with Agin- court on Friday, March 17. Port Perry ran away with this game and took the championship 12-2. This game was very lop-sided in favour of Port Perry which saw the Port squad fill the net with talented plays and nice shots. Scoring for Port were: Jason Cochrane (2), Steve Staniland (2), Jason Towns, Dan Sluggett (3), Jason McBride, Chris McLeod and Jan Heyes. Drawing assists were: Jason Towns, Jody Logan (2), Brett Puckrin, Jeff Parry (2), John Ennis (3), Steve Staniland (2), Chris McLeod, Jason McBride, Jan Heyes, Steve Laird (2) & Jeff Brett (3). With the "C" division cham- pionship in Port's hand they had to play the champions from the "A" Division which was a talented squad from Oakville. This game was played on Satur- day, March 18. This game was a tight one until the third period. Both teams were tied at one heading into the third. Each team was having chances at scoring but the goaltenders were spectacular. However, Port" Perry's fire was put out in the DESIGN & S by Studio third when Oakville went ahead 2-1 and never looked back. The final score was 5-3 for Oakville as they advanced to the Grand Championship. Scoring for Port were: Jeff Parry, Todd Taylor and Jason Cochrane. One special note of this tourna- ment is that Port Perry entered with only one goaltender as Shawn e was on vacation. Port Perry's Ray Doyle played 5 spectacular games. Ray kept Port in the game at crucial moments and did an all around great job. Port Perry ended the year with a championship which was well deserved. The Port squad played hard all year and deserved to cap off their season with a win. Every player gave a great effort all year and should not be disappointed about anything. The team would like to say some "Thank-yous"' for this is the end of another hockey season for Port Perry's Bantam squad. Todd Wilbur, Hillis Wilbur, Lee Wilbur, Steve Durham and Warren Nicholishen should all be thanked for their great job coaching this year's squad. They did a great job by always keeping a fire lit under their players to make a good ef- fort all the time on the ice. A special thanks goes to the mothers who helped at the door with admissions and as well to Ken and Diane Goreski with their sponsorship. It was well ap- preciated by the players and coaches.
