Thunder and ice Weather turns dramatic Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly With Spring arriving today the weather which has been tful for most of the winter has sudden- ly taken a turn for the dramatic style. Last week it tossed us thunderstorms, high winds, ice storms and more snow than any other time during the whole season. The robins returned in full force last week and certainly must wonder why they did. With Spring Break last week many families took some time for travelling. Don and Louise Swain and family, Marg and Ted Kemp and family and Jennifer Byers en- joyed a skiing holiday to Ver- mont. Neil and Kathy McLaughlin and family along with Mrs. Jean Mahaffy enjoyed the holiday in Florida where they * visited Bill and Ruth Marconi. Denzil and Tallya Moore and Todd enjoyed the week in the southern sun. Our community was saddened with the passing of Mrs. Jean Mountjoy after a lengthly illness. Sympathy is extended to her hus- band Bruce Mountjoy, her five children Elaine, Bonnie, Gary, Ray and Paul, her three brothers and many other relatives and friends. The funeral service was held in Blackstock United Church on Sunday afternoon with a large attendance. Pleased to report that Roy Turner is home again after his stay in hospital. Jackpot winners at the C,W,L, Bingo were Bill Connell and Rika Wygerde. The next bingo will be March 31. - oo Two. Blackstock girls enjoyed two exciting events last week. Julie Byers and Esther Kelly at- tended the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Society's Gala on Monday evening at the Royal York. Prince Philip was in attendance at this "Royal Welcome to Spring." Following the seven course dinner and an address by H.R.H. Prince Philip a private concert by Andre- Phillippe Gagnon was enjoyed. On Tuesday afternoon Jim and Barb Byers, Gerald and Joyce Kelly, and leaders Jessie Gunter and Shirley Turner attended the Presentation of Gold Awards of Achievement by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip at the North York City Hall when Julie and Esther were presented with their Gold Award Certificates by Prince Philip. A reception follow- ed at the Novotel North York. Congratulations Julie and Esther. There were 13 tables at the Tuesday evening card party with the following winners: 1. Eileen Moore 2. Word has been received of the passing of Gib Marlow of Brooklin. Gib was a resident of this area for many years before moving to Brooklin. Sympathy to his wife Doris and other relatives and friends. 4-H News On March 2nd 1989, the Blackstock Nifty Knitters held our 3rd meeting. At 7:00 p.m. we opened our meeting with Alice White giving the 4-H Pledge and roll call "Show the tension swatch you made for your project and how did it compare with the ten- sion given in your pattern?" We then decided the date for the next meeting - Thursday, March 9 Esther Kelly then explained the use of blicking explaining that you by overcasting, crocheted and backstitch seams. We then went into groups, those working on samplers and those on projects. We knitted until 8:45 and then over cookies we played a game - "matching definitions with words. We were then reminded of our homework and our next meeting. Thank you to three guests who came to help us with our knitting. Jennifer. Arbuckle Howard and Elva Harris of Lindsay were weekday visitors of Earle and Marjorie Bradburn. On Tuesday, March 14, the afternoon unit of the U.C.W. met in the church with fifteen members present. After a delicious dessert luncheon, unit leader Grace Hall opened the meeting with a reading about "My Possessions." The theme was that all that we have is a gift from God. The offering was taken and the worship service on Lent began. A skit with an Easter theme was presented by Thelma Wright, Marion Larmer, and Agnes Wat- ters. As a closing to this, Marion Larmer led a prayer and read the United Church Creed. Jean Ferguson introduced the guest speaker, Kathleen Petrie of Analda Nurseries who spoke on flowering plants. Roll call was answered with Bible verses about Easter. Minutes were read by Marion Larmer. Jean Adams commented on a recent Presbyterial on Africa. The up- coming U.C.W. Bazaar was discussed. It will be held at the home of Kathleen Watts, 61 Scugog St. on Tuesday, April 11th. Mention was made of a bale which is being packed by the end of March. Spring and summer clothing are needed. Our Federation is fighting for real pension negotiability. It is extremely im- portant that every available member attend.
