Di ERP © apap vege LY 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 4, 1989 Cyclists invited to join Port Perry Cycle Club Springis here, and it's time to start thinking about dusting off the ten-speed that's gathering dustin the basement. Not that everybody dusts off their bikes in the spring. Some adults can shamefacedly say they haven't ridden a bicycle in years. Others passionately look forward to the day when roads are dry enough to peddle on. Jim Wills fits into the latter category. The Prince Albert res- ident is a true cycle buff, and a former racer who trained and raced with the High Park Cycle Clubin Toronto for seven years. The key word in that para- graph is "former." Jim admits he's let himself go a tad since he and his wife bought a house in Prince Albert and did a lot of renovating. Now that the house is done, he is looking forward to spend- ing more time on his bike, and "getting back into shape." To help accomplish this goal, he and a few friends are start- ing the Port Perry Cycle Club, an adults-only group with one thing in common-- a love of the bicycle. "What I'm interested in doing is getting in shape. I'm interest- ed in training, but not racing," he said. "I don't know where the club will go from there." If done properly, cycling, he says, "can be a very beneficial aerobicsport." Jim will be hosting a first meeting Tuesday April 11in the back room of Emiel's Place at 7:30 p.m. to find out how many people share an interest in starting a club. He's hoping the group will get together twice or three times a week for rides. Jim already has a few routes worked out. "If you're going to get in shape, you have to ride about three times a week," he said. A half hour per ride is plenty to start out with, he added. Speed isn't as important as building strength. Eventually, he said, speed will come. "It's important to get the miles on. It doesn't matter how fast you go, as long as you do it," he said. "In a way, it's like weightlifting." *. For now, though, he just wants to see how many people would be interesting in belong- ing toaclub. "It could be a lot of fun," he said with a grin.
