Shy To put it mildly, Doug Thomas is teed off. His Scugog Is- land business, Doug's Small Engine Repair, was broken into in the dead of night recently, and a quantity of cash was sto- len. Doug Is so angry, he's offering a $1,000 to anyone who can give information that will lead to the arrest and convic- tion of the thief or thieves. For detalls, see story. Not that Doug Thomas has a lot of money to throw around-- that's just the problem. Seven years ago he injured his back and neck and was para- lyzed for a while. Since then he has been living on a small com- pensation cheque, and the mon- ey he makes running Doug's Small Engine Repairs out of his garage. He says he relies on the in- come from his business. "Total- ly. The compensation doesn't even cover the mortgage." But he is so angry about a break-in that happened Wednesday March 22nd, he is willing to scrounge up a thou- ~ sand bucks to find the thief. Sometime around midnight on the 22nd, the dark-haired grandfather woke up. "I did hear something, so I got up and turned the lights on and there was nothing," he recalls. Mr. Thomas has an intercom hooked up between his house and his workshop/garage, that is so sensitive it picks up the slightest noise. But the inter- come wasn't working that night--he had to change the bat- tery. Had the intercom been func- tioning, he might have heard the thief or thieves break the casing on the workshop's back PORT PERRY CLINIC HOGAN'S HEARING AID CENTRE of Port Perry DENNIS J. At 7:55 the next morning, his son went into the werkshop to open up for the day, and discov- ered the back door "busted open", and the cash register on the floor, empty of cash. $230 was missing. Only pennies and scme cheques remained. Mr. Thomas' tools and equip- 'ment weren't touched, which leads him to believe the guilty party was after quick cash. "I think it was a kid, who did it because of booze or drugs," he theorized. Two locks were broken on the door. The till, which was forced open, will have to be replaced. As will the door casing. Mr. Thomas figures the incident cost him about $650 altogether. And he doesn't think he's cov- ered by insurance. When he first discovered he was the victim of a break-in, "I was shocked. I didn't think it would happen out here. But it can happen to you. That's a fact. A lot of people take it for grant- ed thatit won't. Butit does." Now he's simply angry. "I'm really upset that any- body would be that low." He's been in business for five years and has never been brok- en into before. The back door to the workshop is well lit by a nearby municipal light stan- dard. His dog slept in a kennel only feet from the door, which was securely locked. He realizes the break-in could have been worse. None of his inventory or tools were touched, but he's angry that it happened at all, and he's deter- mined to catch the person or people who did it. "We're (he and his wife) just ticked right off. We're trying our very darndest to make ends meet. And then this happens." Since the break-in, he's in- stalled a burglar alarm system in the shop. He's prepared if it ever happens again. With a slight smile on his face, Mr. Thomas said, "I almost wish they'd try it again. I'm ready for 'em this time."
