Exciting times for the Scugog Youth Soccer strations in the Scugog Youth r Club are expected to hit an all-time high this sum- mer. Officials said over 200 youngsters registered over the weekend, and they expect that number to surpass last year's total of 265 by the time games startlatein May. Executive member Ron Co- sway said there will be some changes in store, especially for the younger age groups. The mini-squirt division, for example, will be using a small soccer ball this season and playing on a smaller field. This has been adopted by the Canadian Soccer Associa- tion, and the reason, he said, is to speed up the game and en- courage more participation from the players on the field. The off-side rule has been waved for this age group as well. There appears to be no shortage of players in the younger age groups (mini, ~ squirt and atom) In fact, there may be more teams than last season. Mr. Cosway said there like- Registrations expected to pass last year's numbers ly will be two teams in the Mos- quito Boys division playing in the Uxbridge-Stouffville League. And the Mosquito girls team will once again compete in the Durham Region League. He said there currently is a need for more girls and boys in the Pee Wee and Bantam Age groups. Another new feature this season will be the three- division tournament held dur- ing Festival Days in mid-July. The mini-squirts will com- pete at the bowling green on Queen Street, while the Atoms and Mosquitos will play on the fields on Simcoe Street North. And camera buffs will have a ahnce this summer to snap some action photos of soccer games and enter their pictures in a contest.
