Local Junior Farmer selected Jane's going to Britain by Rob Streich Jane Teefy, from Sunder- land, will represent Ontario Jun- ior Farmers in E this sum- mer, travelling and living in Great Britain for three months, She will be staying with host families across the isles, moving to different areas each week, trav- elling generally north to south. Jane explai "you go to live with them and do what they do. You try to help out as muc as you are able." Her trip will involve a month in each of Scotland, Ireland and England/Wales. Teefy and three men were selected to participate in the trip sponsored by the Ontario Minis- try of A acshuse and Food. (0) covers the flight to Europe and back, the families provide for all of the Junior Farm- ers' needs while there. Jane will only be responsible for taking along gifts for the host families and spending money. The 28 year old Credit Un- ion employee has been involved with farm youth groups seeming- ly forever. Jane grew up on her family dairy farm in Sunderland. She participated in the local 4-H Club through her teenage years. Teefy joined Junior Farmers almost ten years ago and has held executive positions locally, in the zone and been on a provincial committee. "I've never been to Europe before," explained Jane, "I'm looking forward to experiencing the English lifestyle. I hope I get to see the tourist sites and every- thing else." Jane managed to arrange a leave from work for months. Although this means she has a job in September, she is a little disappointed that she will be unable to take the time to see more of Europe with the other three Canadian exchangees. To receive this honour, Jane was required to have three 4-H units completed, and to pass an exam on general Canadian and agricul information. Then put together and present a slide show highlighting her experiences and life in Canada. Finally, she need- ed to go through an interview be- fore Ministry personnel and for- mer Junior Farmer representatives. Although the interviews were on February 18, it took a month for the judges to decide who would be going. A few weeks ago, Jane was told to pack her bags, she's head- ing overseas on June S. Jane explained that her hob- bies are skating, travelling and photography, two of which she will take advantage of this sum- mer. The Junior Farmers sponsor other trips to countries around the world. Two people were selected to go to Australia for six months and two go to Germany for two weeks. She had high praise for the Ontario Junior Farmer program which helps to provide 19-29 year olds with leadership training, self-confidence building, public speaking experience and a little agricultural learning. Unlike the 4-H program, Junior Farmers is directed at both urban and rural youngsters. Jane said that over her years in the program she has witnessed growth in many people including herself. "Younger kids look up to you for advice. The improvement and difference after a few years with the program is unreal." Junior Farmers across Ontari have just raised over $24,000 to be donated to the canine training institute - where they work with teach dogs to lead the blind.
