EATERY ONE 00 YW R 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 11, 1989 Road woes in View Lake by Rob Streich The residents of View Lake have had enough of bumpy roads, and they are not going to take it anymore. Several residents have band- "ed together to produce a petition asking council to "act now on their fair and necessary de- mands." Barb Walton is the head of a committee of five women work- ing to bring atttention to the View Lake problem at the Township Council. This group is circulating a petition which is meeting with nearly unanimous support. They will be presenting this petition to Council on April 17. The basis of the petition is to ask council for four items: That a sign be erected which identifies View Lake as a community (as it is one of the fastest growing areas in Scugog). A sign to caution drivers that there are children in the area, for them to slow their vehicles. The donation of some play- ground equipment for the grow- ing number of small children in the area. Finally, the improvement of the portion of old Highway 57 from the View Lake boundary, down to the repaired portion at Scugog Point Road. Barb Walton began to orga- nize this protest because of an in- cident earlier in the year. She lives directly beside Regional . Road 57. One day, a tractor trail- er came barrelling around the View Lake corner, much faster fhe the posted 60 km/h speed imi* ATTENTION BUSINESSES ... She was walking down the shoulder with her two sons hold- ing her hands. As the truck went past, the force of the air displace- ment created a draft which nearly dragged her youngest boy under the trailer. She is afraid that if he had been walking alone, he might have been run over. Together with other resi- dents she is asking for changes to these current conditions which are detrimental to the safety of residents of View Lake. Most people living in this northeastern corner of Scugog Township work in the south part of Durham Region, or even in To- ronto. They all must use this road to get back and forth to work eve- ryday. With many truckers and oth- ers using this route as a short cut between Lindsay and Port Perry, and the incredible amount of sum- mer weekend traffic, the condi- tions will only get worse with the constant wear. Because View Lake children are bused to Blackstock or Port Perry for school everyday, the condition of the road is very im- portant. Mrs. Dianne Wilson, a committee member, is very con- cerned that her children's hcalth has been impacted by the road condtions. Mrs. Wilson challenges Scu- gog Councillors to, "take the drive sitting in the back seat of a school bus." That is a good way for them to observe the road con- ditions she said. Mrs. Walton, a five year res- ident of the area, indicated that the people on the border of Scu- gog Township and Victoria SOFTWARE WORD PERFECT, LOTUS, DAYS call: 642-1200 Thinking of computerizing your business? "We have problem getting police response out here. By the time they arrive, the situation is usually over." She said, "The councillors admit that we are ig- nored because of our location on the edge of Durham Region." They hope that Ward Four councillor Glen Malcolm will be responsive to their concerns. Walton said, "He seemed nice enough at election time. But we don't need nice guys as council- lors, we need workers!" 2 Councillor Malcolm said, "I've been addressing the issue all winter." Rough road woes It you have ever travelled down Regional road 57 from View Lake to Caesarea you know how rough the ride Is. Residents of View Lake are afraid for the health and safety of everyone In the community. Five View Lake women have formed a committee and are peti- tioning Council to speed up the repairs and post some signs. From left to right; Mary Bos- teimann, Barb Walton, Jeremy Walton (19 months), John Walton, Dianne Wilson. The Councillor explained that the goals of the residents are not obtainable overnight. The signs requested should be availa- ble in the near future, but because theroad is mostly a regional mat- ter, local council has little control. "Regional road 57 is slated to be repaired in stages over the next three years. I can't really in- fluence that, as it is a matter of budget," said Councillor Mal- colm. The committee feels that the needs of the le of the area have been neglected for too long. Residents of View Lake, and other road users indicated that they are often forced to drive on the wrong side of the road in or- der to avoid the bumps. The committee indicated that the merchants of Port Perry should be concerned, because poor road conditions force them to do their shopping in Lindsay instead of Port. Mrs. Walton wamed, "If there is an accident, the Township will be the one responsible." Several letters to the editor in the Port Perry Star have ad- dressed the concem over the View Lake problem. One wom- an wrote that she is concerned that her vehicle and her health are being damaged by the drive. For their tax dollars, the only services residents of View Lake see themselves receiving are gar- bage collection, snow removal and an occasional shovel full of asphalt to temporarily fill in the larger potholes. In terms of the park/ playground issue, the ladies are in the process of forming a parks committee. This would provide a body to help run the park and maintain some aspects of it.
