TE EN ERENT EIN. dail Ll faa Ul Ll EL hh 2h a ha Le a A Just like books, only different TR ----_--_-- Toy library fun coming to Port Perr Toys aren't cheap these days, as every parent knows. Children may say they want this toy or that toy, and parents may rush out to buy the high- priced item--but who is to say the children won't tire of the toy after just one week? Wouldn't it be nice if children could try out the toy for a week? To make sure, first of all, that the child likes it, and to ensure itis going to last. A toy library does just that, and according to Utica resident and mother Martha Larsen, there are thousands of toy li- braries all over Canada and the United States. Together with fellow parents Pat Bird and Marilyn Pearce (Scugog Township Ward 2 Councillor), Mrs. Larsen is working to set up a toy library in Port Perry. The group has already found a place for the library at the United Church in Port Perry, and has scheduled the library to begin operation in September 1989, on Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for children aged 0 to 6. : Mrs. Larsen says parents can become members of the non- rofit organization for a small ee, and are then issued a "li- brary card', allowing them to sign out a different toy each week. But she says the library will offer more than just a chance sign out toys. It gives parents a chance to actually play with their chil- dren during the weekly ses- sions. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the li- brary on the Thursday morn- ings, and stay and play-- something parents don't always find time to do. i The library will also be set up like a co-op, with parents tak- ing turns acting as librarians . So as well as having a chance to play with their children, par- ents will be meeting other par- ents in a relaxed, carefree set- ting. It's a great way to gee the im- portance of play in the develop- ment of happy, healthy children and it is a wonderful way to de- velop strong parent/child rela- tionships. As with any new project, the library will need help in orga- nizing and running the centre on a co-op basis. Mrs. Larsen says any time given would be appreciated. And as well as time, the li- brary will need as many new (or slightly used) quality toys as possi ble. Mrs. Larsen is hoping local businesses will contribute to the project by purchasing toys that "match their business." The Prince Albert School Ad- visory Committee, for example, is purchasing a Fisher Price Schoolhouse. "Or maybe Lake Scugog Lum- ber might want to purchase a truck," Mrs. Larsen suggested. She will be approaching busi- nesses in the near future. So far, everyone she has talked to about the library has been enthusiastic. "The response has been over- whelming," she says. Mrs. Larsen is hoping for more enthusiasm when the group holds a fashion show May 17 at the Port Perry United Church, with all proceeds going towards the toylibrary. Designer Look, a unique To- ronto store, will be providing the fashions (worn by local mod- els)and Irwin Smith has agreed to provide music. : Tickets will be available shortly from models or by phon- ing Martha Larsen at 985-8916, Marilyn Pearce at 985-9250 or Pat Bird at 985-9368. In the meantime, Jack Larsen, his sister Deena, Sherrl Wassink and Erin Bird have to be content with their own toys. For details on this exciting new project, see story.
