They move this Thursday so let's all remember to wish them farewell! ! On a sadder note, Jim is still in Port Perry Hospital and has unfortunately suffered a set back in last few days. Leanne Philip goes for gold down east (From page 20; This year Leanne has been in- volved with the Durham Board of Education's Co-Op Program, but instead of working at a local business, Leanne has been working on her Science Fair project, reporting directly to the Ministry of Transportation and Communication. : The Ministry supplies her with chemicals and information and Leanne turns in all her re- ports to the Ministry. She figures she has spent "hundreds of hours" on the pro- Jectso far this year. Her project this year is more detailed than any of the others she has done. Which makes her a good candidate for the gold medal. As well as the medal, there are many hefty prizes up for grabs--$210,000 in prizes to be exact, including a trip to Oxford University in London, England, to compete in the International Science Fair. For many students, doing a Science Fair project is one big pain in the neck. But Leanne has proved, once and for all, that an honest effort can open many doors. Because of her own successes, Leanne has been asked to speak to young students about Science Fair, something she enjoyed. When she finishes high school, she may, in fact, study to be a teacher..Or she might be an engineer. Or a researcher. Or a doctor. Whatever she decides to do, Leanne will no doubt be suc- cessful if she applies the same kind of determination she has shown in her Science Fair work. In the meantime, she's gear- ing up for the nationals, hoping to strike gold. High school winners Although Leanne Philip swept most of the major awards at the Durham Regional Sci- ence Fair, there were other win- ners from Port Perry High School. David Butler and Nathan Robinson (both Grade 9 stu- dents) won Honourable Men- GUARANTEED INVESTMENT Annual Rates tions in the Intermediate Biolo- gy division. David Volman and Ron Ran- kin won Silver medals in the In- termediate Engineering divi- sion. Evan Hildreth won the AEG Bayly Award for the Best Elec- trical project.
