a El Ringette skills sharpened PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 11, 1989 -- 27 Novice girls deserve an 'A' for efforts The Home Hardware Novice Ringettes have had a happy and successful season, Maybe they did not win too many games, but they did improve drastically in the goals for and against statistics, they all improved their ringette skills, and they did learn : to play each minute on the ice as a team, Their coaches Walter Senyk, Diane Hooker, and Todd Poppleton were great, and each of them was respected and well- . liked by the girls. The Port Novices participated at the Regionals last week-end, and while they did not win any games, their play had improved so much over last year that it was the topic of conversation among the parents and coaches of the other teams. coaches and fans were proud of the girls' non-stop effort, and the team was rewarded with the "Sportsmanship Award" which was voted on by all the opposing squads. Because the defensive players were called on each game to give all they had, these girls all im- proved a great deal. Katie Senyk, who will move to Petites next year, is known around the circuit as a goalie of extraordinary talent. Our veteran defensive line of Jana Senyk and Pam Hiltz, who are both Novices again next year, learned to play so well together that they began to anticipate the moves of one another. They regularly stopped the 'attack of Strong leadership helped Petites tackle competition (From page 26) The very important third game was played in Little Britain on Saturday afternoon against the strong Pickering team who were as yet undefeated in the tourna- ment. Within the first two minutes Pickering took the lead and our team knew they would have to play one of their best games ever in order to keep up with this strong team which had beaten both Oshawa and Beaverton very decisively in earlier games. Playing short-handed and with less than a minute left in the first period, the Port Perry team put on the pressure with Amanda Webb tieing the score, assisted by Leea. Kinnunen and Deanna Dempsey. : Pickering scored early in the second period to make it 2-1 but Brandie Harris (assisted by Amanda Webb) moved in on the opposing goalie and scored to tie the game again. Pickering came right back to take the lead at 3-2 but a goal by Leea Kinnunen assisted by Deanna tied it again. With four minutes left in the game Pickering scored again. At this point some teams would have _ started to lose heart but the Port Perry team was still playing with spirit, aggressiveness, optimism and great team work. When Pickering got a tripping penalty the Brutons' Petites lost no time in scoring to tie it up again with 1:34 left in the game. This last goal was scored by Lisa Dodd assisted by Leea. Another tiel Now what? Although Port Perry had not lost a game they had not won one either and even the convenor at Little Britain wasn't quite sure when the next game would take place or against who, so most of the team stayed to watch Beaver- "ton defeat Oshawa. At this point Port was told that they were in se- cond place and would play their Port Perry's: girls much bigger and stronger than themselves, Brooke Shanley, one of the most-improved players, and Bonni-Jo Norton, who won the trophy as the "Most Sport- smanlike Player," rounded out the defensive lines and made their share of plays to frustrate the op- position. Brooke and Bonni-Jo will also be Novices again, and as a result, the new Novice team will be very strong in defence. The offensive players were led by Captain Cara Vander Slagt and Cindy Vershuuren, who will both be moving up to Petites after three years of Novice, Others who will join the Petites next year are Michele Branton, Dana Hooker, and Mandy Smart. Michelle is another player who has improv- ed a lot over the season, Dana is our girl to watch out for when she "has one of her super games, and Mandy was so versatile she could move from white stick to blue stick many times in a game. The girls who will be the core of the Novice Offense next year are Laura Hooker, who has had her share of taking over white stick this year, Alechia Cracknell who confusses the goalie with her spin- ning shots from the free pass cir- cle, and Jennifer Elliot who had a perfect goal in the first game of the Regionals. As the team sadly hangs up its skates and sweaters for the year, it thanks Home Hardware for its sponsorship, the coaches for their time and laughter, and Laurie Senyk for the drinks and the hugs. final game in Lindsay on Sunday morning against Pickering. Un- fortunately the Ringette con- venors.in Lindsay decided later that Port Perry was in fact being ranked third and would have to play for the Bronze later that evening in Lindsay. The race against time and circumstances was on and much credit has to go to the coaches and manager who managed to find every player and get them to the Lindsay arena for an 8:45 p.m. game. Remember that these girls had been up since 5:30 a.m. and had been informed at 4 p.m. that they were in second place and would not play again until Sunday morning! As it turned out, there was so much confusion, and just 30 minutes before the game there were as many Beaverton players showing up to play against Oshawa as there were Port Perry players but eventually the game went on with Port playing against Oshawa for the Bronze. It was a disappointing game: for all con- cerned. Ustiawa Look an early lead but as in other games the Port Perry team kept coming back to tie it up. In spite of their loss, the spirit and determination which has characterized this team all season was shown just by the fact that all the team members managed to make it to that last game in spite of all odds, and throughout the Regional tourna- ment they were always con- sidered strong contenders and provided the fans with several of the most exciting games of the weekend. ] gh Congratulations for a fine season to Sarah Coyne, Shona Moase, Jenny Storms, Mellissa Pereman, Katherine Ellis, Aman- da Clouthier, Jean Templeman, Kyla McCrae, Heather Lally, Vicki Stainton, Brandy Harris, Deanna Dempsey, Lisa Dodd, Leea Kinnunen and Amanda Webb.
