Billed as the largest tourna- ment in North America, Pineridge was pitted against teams from Pennsylvania, New Ontario in the Eastern section of 'the Squirt/Atom International competition, Being the final event of the season; the boys were cer- tainly up for this tournament, displaying the individual and team skills they developed over the season along with a lot of determination and perserverence. Port Perry's first game on Fri- day, March 30 was against Jersey City, New Jersey. Although Port dominated the play during most of the game and had a 2-0 advan- tage half way through the game, Jersey City managed to tie the score by the end of the 2nd. Scoring in the 1st period was Jeff Clarke, assis by Ryan Williams and Greg Thompson; Brad Shanley accounted for goal in the 2nd period with assist going again to Greg Thompson; and in the 3rd period, Greg Thompson from Matt Hobbs and Kevin Gray; and Shawn Lewerentz, unassisted. The games Best Ef- fort award deservingly went to Greg Thompson. ; Pineridge"s second game against a team from Mt. Lebanon, Pensylvania was much .more closely contested. Throughout the game, both teams had numerous opportunities, but sharp goaltending by both sides 'kept the game scoreless until partway through the 2nd period. Port gave up the first goal, but on- ly a minute later came back to tie it up. Later in the period, Port Perry went ahead on a short handed goal. This game saw some great penalty killing by the defen- sive units, and it was another short handed goal in the 3rd period that broke the 2-2 tie and ended the scoring. Markers in this game came from Kevin Gray and Jeff Jamieson in the 2nd period with assists to Matt Hobbs, Greg Thompson and Jeff Clarke. The winning 3rd period goal came from Matt Hobbs with Greg Thompson and Shawn Lewerentz pitching in for assists. The Best Effort award in this game went to Matt Hobbs. Having won both their games, the Pineridge squad had earned a total of 8 points in the period by period scoring system. In the divi- sion championship, Port was fac- ing Bolton, Ontario'who had ac- cumulated 9 points in their 2 victories. ; Winning this game alone was not enough to guarantee the championship. Port had to win convincingly and carry enough of the 'game to earn more total points than Bolton. Knowing they were the underdog. Port came out shooting and inthe first two . minutes of the game had earned a 2-0 lead. From here on in it was back and forth excitement until the end: of the game. The Best Effort award in this game went to Darryl Holtby. Port's goals came from Matt Hobbs and Kevin Gray; Greg Thompson assisted in both goals and Jason Logan earned an assist on Kevin's goal. ' Having won the East division championship, Port Perry went on to challenge Stroud, Ontario, winner of the Western division, to decide the overall tournament champions. Although 'all members of the Pineridge team gave 100 per cent, working every minute of the game, they were unable to recover from the 3-0 lead Stroud had gained in the 1st period. The only marker for Port in the 4-1 loss, was scored by Darryl Moase from Jeff Clarke and Kent Taylor. Another strong effort earned Brandon Hammond the Best Effort award. It is fitting that the season end on positive and winning note - as a reminder of the fruits of genuine effort, teamplay and sportsman- ship. All the members of the Pineridge Sports Atom II team should be congratulated for their efforts and accomplishments both | on the ice and as representatives of the community.
