Letters To the Editor: I have been reading and hear- ing all the comments concerning the Chalk Lake spring on Durham Road 23, it seems our own Mayor is in favour of having the spring capped. There are thousands of people (not hundreds) who de- pend on that spring for their only water supply. As we all know, the water supp- ly is becoming very critical with our lack of snow and rain, there are more and more wells going dry. Having new wells drilled is not the answer because the ma- jority of us are not financially able to meet the expense. Even if they do hit water there is no guarantee that the water will be Hearing a must! To the Editor: I have noted with interest, your comments concerning the re- activations of the Provincial Park at the North end of Scugog Island. - We who live on the Island have heard nothing about a Public Hearing, where the Ministry will discuss their plans and the effects those plans will have upon the local residents. A Hearing is a must. The Park failed the last time, due to dreadful management plus ignoring the good advice of local rate payers. If a Public Hearing is not call- ed soon, we intend to have one of our own. : Sincerely, Joel Aldred safe. My own sister had a well drilled, they hit water alright but she can not even use it for her laundry, because of the large con- tent of minerals in the water. Some of us who do have a good well cannot use it for cooking and drinking because the water is too hard. So as a result we carry our water from the Chalk Lake spring for all consumption purposes. I have a water softener but there is also a draw back with that. Most if not all water softeners have a key ingredient which is salt, there is a small amount of salt in the water we consume, and a great many peo- ple cannot have salt for medical reasons. If the spring is capped where does that leave all the people who rely on it. I know you can buy water in most grocery stores but a large number of people just do not have the money to buy water. There must be another alter- native besides capping the spring, to eliminate the hazards that are caused by so many people park- ing on the side of the road. Peo- ple wouldn't have to spend as much time at the spring if there was more than one outlet. If it was branched off into four or five outlets (all coming out of the same outlet that is already there), people could get their water a lot quicker and be gone, which would eliminate so many cars there at one time, and possibly fill in along the highway a bit so the cars could get in off the shoulder and provide a parking area so cars wouldn't have to park on the opposite side of the road. I think this could be accomplished without spending $140,000. Even if the region does have to spend some money to make it less Thousands depend on spring water hazardous, and lets just say that some day it does become con- taminated after a period of time, at least we know our tax dollars were spent in an effort to serve the public. A lot of our money is spent on things that are needed less than our water supply. I think by saying this I speak for a very large number of people. With all this talk of having the spring capped, people are bring- ing more and more containers to fill up with the water just in case the spring is capped when they go back for another supply, which is another reason why there are so many cars there at one time. Some people have good wells and good water so I know that everyone would not agree that the money should be spent on the spring, as does our mayor, but there are too many people who re- ly on the spring as their only source of water too just let it be capped without a fight. I hope the matter of capping the spring will be considered very carefully and I really pray that the people (like our mayor) will realize the importance of the con- tinued use of this spring, and have enough sensitivity towards the people who need it, to give this matter their utmost consideration before deciding what the end result will be.
