13235, Sportsland discovers gold as Regional B champs The other winter sport played in Port Perry, namely Ringette, saw Sportsland Juhiors travel to Lind- say the weekend of April 1st, as league champs, determined to take it all and bring home the gold. Friday nights game had the fans concerned after a 6-5 victory over an upstart Whitby team that Port Perry had beaten decisive- ly this year. With time to think Sportsland played Saturday after- noon against another league team from Woodville and with a strong effort from all the girls. Port Perry came away 10-6 victors. Sat. night's game against Oshawa showed Sportsland had one thing in mind to take it all. Port Perry had beaten Oshawa at the Ottawa Winterlude for the gold, but was expecting a hard fought game. The win over Oshawa by the score of 12-4 put Sportsland in the medal rounds with the only team left to beat be- ing this years rival, Lindsay. Sunday morning's 8 a.m. game against Lindsay had parents and fans concerned knowing all season the girls were not a good morning team. In a see-saw game that looked like it wasn't going to decide anything and end in a 5-5 - tie as the clock ticked down. Lind- say drew a penalty which the referee whistled down, with 5 The Sportsiand Junior Ringette team from P ~ Heather Lawrence, Laural Menzies. Middle ro seconds left as the final buzzer rang. The alert coaching staff from Port made their point to the referee and five seconds was add- ed to the clock with the face off be- ing in Lindsays end. A pass from Cheryl Armstrong and a quick wrist shot by Lisa Levy went by the Lindsay goalie with 1 second left to play. Sportsland won 6-5 and were undefeated in 4 games. As fate would have it the teams that played hard against one another all year were going to face off for thesilver or gold. At the end of the first period the teams were tied at 4 with 20 min. left to decide it all. Sportsland scored a couple of quick goals and never looked back in a 9-6 victory, topping off the year as Regional B Champs. Enough can't be said about the team that had 12 players to begin with and through misfortune, finished the season with ten deter- mined girls. Heather Lawrence stood tall between the pipes in all 5 games stopping some of the top shooters in the league. The defence of Nicole Slack, Terry Bell and Sylvia Durward skated hard, checked and broke up opposing teams forwards with a never say die effort. The forwards consisting of Lisa Levy, Cheryl Armstrong, Denna Lovering, Niki Beare, Danielle Lally and Laurel Menzies crisp passing along with heads up play and awesome shooting, left oppos- ing goalies shaking their heads. Danielle Cooper cheered on her team mates unable to play after a knee injury. Hope to see you back next year! The coaching staff of Jim and Marg Lawrence, Rob Cooper, Janice Lovering and Jacki Little where on their toes, keeping the team rolling throughout the tournament. Points accumulated during the tournament were Nicole Slack 2 goals 4 assists, Sylvia Durward 3 assists, Danielle Lally 3 assists, 'Lisa Levy 12 goals 8 assists, Terry Bell 2 assists, Niki Beare 5 goals 4 assists, Laurel Menzies 5 assists, Cheryl Armstrong 15 goals 10 assists, Denna Lovering 9 goals 7 assists, and Heather Lawrence 1 assist. Don't forget girls, there's another couple of banners to be hung in the'Port Perry Arena. Be proud of them after a successful season which included a silver medal at Markham Tournament along with gold at Woodville and -the Ottawa Winterlude Tourn. Congratultions to the girls for being the first junior team ever to win gold at their own Port Perry tournament. ort Perry.
