Actually, Zakeana is prob- ably the only member of the Bo- relians who is amazed. Her bril- liant performance as Willy in the recent production of "The Passion of Dracula" impressed everyone--including the adjudi- cator who awarded this ingra- tiating 17 year old Port Perry actress the prestigious silvery prize. Which isn't too shabby, con- sidering Zakeana was sure she wouldn't even get the part. "Thad to audition but I kind of didn't want to because my best friend Jennifer (Jennifer Fletcher, an award-winner from last season's "Nobody Loves A Dragon") was audition- ing too," Zakeana said breath- lessly. "She won best actress last year and I thought, why am Ihere?" gil] Obviously she impréssed di- rector John Foote, who gave her the part as Willy, the ingenue who evil Dracula wants to mar- ry. Willy was one of the starring roles, a particularly demanding part because it called for a dra- matic seduction scene between Dracula (Steve Foote) and Wil- ly. Zakeana was dressed in a housecoat for most of the play, but in the "love scene" she wore nothing but a skimpy night- gown. "T honestly didn't think I was going to be able to pull this off," she said. "I kind of told my Mom as little as possible (about the scene). She was in the audience and as soon as I came. in and took off my housecoat, everyone in the audience just turned and looked at her." _ Zakeana grinned, remember- ing. She said co-star Steve Foote gave her alot of support. "Steve was a great help. I. really admire him," she said. In one scene, he carried a weak- kneed Willy up a steep flight of * stairs. "Steve didn't drop me down the stairs! I was so worried he was going to drop me and he didn't have his Passes on," Za- keana said, laughing. She enjoyed the play im- mensely and was proud of her work, but she was sure Halie Vogel, nominated for her part in Agnes of God, would have won, "She should have got it," Za- keana said modestly. Borelians honoured at ACT-CO awards by S.James-Mitchell On April 8th about 30 well- dressed members of The Bore- lians Theatre group attended the ACT-CO (Association of Community Theatres, Central Ontario) gala at the Lakeshore Inn, Toronto. This annual event brings to- gether community - theatre groups from across Central On- tario for an evening of socializ- ing, dinner, dancing and awards. The theme for this year's gala was "That Old Black Magic" with the ballroom decorated in glittering style and a troupe of roving magicians, calling them- selves "A They baffled the 700 guests with their slight of hand illu- sions.
