Cornish Junior Boys Basketball team' won the Durham Central Champion- ships on April 19 in a fast, run- ning game. Last Wednesday, the Cor- nish Cougars defeated the Sun- derland Stampeders in a hard fought match, 27-21. Cornish took an early lead and held it while Sunderland couldn't quite make their height advantage pay off. Sunderland, the Northern Pool winners in Durham Cen- tral, were close behind Cornish all the way, with just a two Interested in rowing Scugog? Having bid the ice a fond point spread after the first 16 minute half. There was a vocal crowd of thirty spectators on hand to cheer on the two teams. This win puts the grade five and six Cornish boys into the Regional playoffs. } Sandy Mark was the high scorer for Cornish with Graig Laird, Matt Morris, Dar Bourgeois and Ian McCready playing astronggame. Coach Jim Justynski is ex- trememly pleased with his teams' performance. He com- mented that over the years he has been coaching, he has seen farewell, and none to soon for == most, it's time to think about water sports once more. Sailboats and motorboats, canoes and kayaks are being primed for the long, hot, summer ahead, but in the early morning, when the water is sheer and still, it begs to be rowed upon. Rowing is a fast and exciting sport. The sleek line of a racing shell cutting through the water is a perfect combination of grace and strength. Rowing provides a total body workout and although is appears to be the upper body that is being used, the legs do 80 per cent of the work. The car- diovascular benefits are ex- cellent, comparable to cross- country skiing or swimming: There are many variations of rowing, from one person "scull- ing," to a crew of eight in a sixty two foot long boat. Anyone can learn to row; it's easy and fun: Although rowing does not receive much media attention, there are many active clubs in . Ontario. Currently, a small group of dedicated oarsmen are forming a club in Oshawa. If there was enough local interest to form a small recreational club here, it could be affiliated with Oshawa and act as a host club for future races and regattas on Lake Scugog.
