Although the golf season is just barely underway, there has been a lot of activity around the Sunnybrae Club for the past several months. Sunnybrae in Prince Albert was purchased last February by five partners headed by Ho- ward Lee and Barry Bowers of Unionville. And almost immediately, the new owners began to make some extensive renovations to the interior and exterior of the club-house. In fact, members and other casual golfers familiar with the 18 hole course, will notice quite a numberof changes this sea- son. Alan Chud is the head pro- fessional at Sunnybrae, and in an interview with the Star last week, he said a great deal of thought and care went into the renovations. The pro shop and lounge have been re-modelled to make more efficient use of the availa- ble space. New carpeting is de- signed to give the interior a "brighterlook." And at the back of the club, facing the 18th green, a new ground floor outdoor patio has been built, and above it a large (720 square foot) elevated deck where golfers can relax over ° food and a cold drink and watch the play on the 18th fairway and green. Constructing this raised 'deck was an important part of the overall club-house renova- tions, and Mr. Chud said he ex- 'pects it will prove to be a very "popular spot for members and +. theirguests. ~The course itself has been & opén: for about a week on the ° "front nine, with the back nine holes expected to be dry enough >. for play this week. "w=. Mr, Chud said that as the golf season progesses, the greenskeeping staff will be pay- ing particular attention to high standards of maintenance. Al Chud Is the professional at Sunnybrae Golf This will include contour mowing of fairways, sprucing up the tees, aprons and traps, and careful cutting of the greens. The intention, he said, is to make the course pleasing to the eye, which in turn should make for a more enjoyable round of golf. "We are not planning any large scale changes to the course, but members will notice thelittle things," he explained. Originally from Aurora, Mr. Chud is a carded Class A CPGA professional, who last year was the head pro at the Richmond Hill Golf Club. He is fully qualified to give professional instruction and plans clinics over the summer forladies and juniors. He has been an active player on the Ontario CPGA tour, and he's looking forward to this August when he will rep- resent Sunnybrae at the Cana- dian Club Professional tourna- mentin St. Andrews, N.B. At Sunnybrae, the pro shop carries a full range of equip- ment and accessories, and Mr. Chud will pay special attention to fitting golfers with the right equipment to suit their individ- ual games and budget. He is alsoqualified to carry out repairs to golf clubs. The shop has ordered 40 new pull carts for rental and 16 new gas carts. Last year, Sunnybrae had about 2560 members, and in to- day's highly competitive golf market, the Club wants to make 2 Ne Club this season. He's a CPGA Class A carded pro qualified to teach and advise In all aspects of the game from lessons to equip- ment purchase to club repairs. Sunnybrae Is under new ownership this season and some extensive renovations have been done to the clubhouse, along with up-grading of the course itself.
