Sumo fighters fight inside a ring that is marked out on the floor. A game is won when some- one is pushed out of thewring, or falls down inside the ring. It's Youll interesting and fun to watch! Public baths are used in Ja- pan usually as a social activity, rather than a cleansing ritual. Men and women bathe in sep- arate baths, but there are some where men and women can bathe together. The baths are very hot, and shallow and quite large. The one I visited had an adjoining bath outside, so that is where I went. There was snow, but the cool air felt refreshing because the baths are so hot! Since everyone is naked in the baths there is a saying that people can meet their best friends in the baths. You can't hide anything from them, and they can't hide any- thing from you. But, the gossip that goes on in those places be- tween women is incredible! They think I don't under- stand what they say about me, but when I answer their embar- rassing questions about me to each other, the look on their fac- esis priceless. Japanese toilets are, well, dif- ferent. They are just beautified holes in the ground. To use one is a little tricky at firat (espe- cially when you have to use your imagination and guess!) but the technique can be mastered. All you have to do is squat, al- though it takes good balance and strong legs. Before I came to Japan, I thought that many people would be wearing kimonos, that most people lived in traditional style homes (paper walls, no pri- vacy, all tatami mat rooma). ButJapanis very different. Many people only wear kimo- nos on special occasions (the older generation is more fre- quent, though) and the homes in fact have become quite mod- ern. In a way, it's a shame that Ja- pan is slowly losing its culture, but the new generation of young people are greatly inflenced by the western world. They enjoy spending their time at discos (dances), bars, go- ing to movies, playing sports (baseball, golf, swimming etc.), shopping and bowling (which EE VALUE EE THE MONTH. has become popular). McDonald's is also very popu- lar food among teenagers, as well as Kentucky Fried Chick- en, Wendy's and Pizza Hut. The other day, one of my friends commented on how much I am becoming like a Jap- anese. No matter how strange it may sound, it is absolutely true. I never realized it until she told me, When I return home, I'm go- ing to have to be re- westernized, ie. stop the bow- ing, the polite speech, stop us- ing chopsticks or eating rice (I'll probably have a rice-fit like a caffeine-fit) and learn English again! I don't miss Canada, but I'in looking forward to seeing every- one again! I become sad when I think about leaving my friends, my families and the life that I have here. It will be hard to return home. --Cheryl Martin. BATTE RIE ES Get started right now with great battery values! BCU1 - Fits many "Garden Tractors and Snowmobiles.
