The resolution was passed Monday afternoon on the suggestion from councillors Yvonne Christie and Don Co- chrane. "The only reason that spring should be capped is if the water becomes polluted," stated councillor Christie. Council was presented with a survey conducted by lo- cal shop owner Lyn Sparling which showed that 84 people wanted the spring kept open and available. Four people had no opinion and just one suggest- editbe closed. The controversy around The WATERMIL 1 mile north of Manchester on Hwy. this spring has been bubbling away for the last couple of months. The spring comes out of the ground in Uxbridge Township on the west side of Durham Road, the water goes under the road via a pipe and on the Scu- gog side, hundreds of people stop to fill jugs and containers each week. ; The Regional government is very concerned about the po- tential for a serious accident with so many people stopping their cars beside the road as the collect their water. Two weeks ago in a Region- al council meeting, Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor suggested that the spring should be capped, and Scugog Mayor Howard Hall agreed. They said then they would 12 985-3766 attempt to get the support from their local councils for a capping: at the source. But Scugog council was unanimous in its resolution not to cap the spring. Councillor Christie has said in the past that many resi- dents of rural Scugog depend on that spring for drinking water, especially those with bad wells. At one point this winter, the Region considered spending $140,000 to construct a parking area for people collecting water, but the Region's legal depart- ment reacted cooly to that idea from a liability point of view. It was not know Monday af- ternoon whether Uxbridge Township council had passed any kind of resolution on wheth- er the spring should be capped ornot.
