Epsom speed debate Reducing the posted speed limits through the hamlet of Ep- som would not make for greater pedestrian safety, and in fact might have the opposite affect, according to the Durham Re- gion Traffic Department. } "Reducing the speed limit on :Regional Road 8 (through "Epsom) to 70 km/hr would have little effect on the operating speed (of vehicles) without con- tinuous enforcement. Reducing the speed to 60 km/hr woul produce a false sense of security (for pedestrians) and create greater enforcement problems," states a letter to the Township from the Region's traffice dept. Township council had asked for the report following. concerns earlier this year about youngsters having to cross Re- gional Road 8 to get to school. The report states that dur- ing traffic studies in late 1987, most vehicles through Epsom were travelling under 93 km/hr, Yih the average speed 87 km/ r. Regional councillor Yvonne Christie was not happy with the report when it was tabled at Monday's council meeting. "Is there any way this can be a special zone because this council feels strongly about the situation," she asked. "I am really disappointed. This is an area that needs our attention," she said. Other councillors agreed and decided not to let the mat- ter rest.
