Serviced land costs doubled due to The cost of "government bungl- ing" has doubled costs of land ser- viced for housing in recent months, and will cause it to dou- ble again in six months in most of the province, Ontario Home Builders' Association (QHBA) President Alido Di Iorio said April 18. Speaking to members of the Oshawa-Durham Home Builders' Association, Di Iorio said the cost to produce a home is not rising significantly, but that higher prices were the fault of govern- ment policies causing land values to soar. "When the municipalities and provincial authorities take seven to nine years to approve a development proposal before a single home gets built,' asked Di Iorio, "is it any wonder costs go nie and Terry Halward, local May Is Multiple Sclerosis Mont da, Durham Reglonal Chapter, May 11, 12 and 13. Land for housing is scarce because the provincial govern- ment keeps it scarce, by neglec- ting to fund new services like roads, sewers and schools, Di Iorio said. He also called on the provincial government to re-examine the basis for allocation of funds to municipalities. In particular, he said, the government should examine the cost pressures caused by home buyers moving further away from urban centres in search of lower land costs. The effect of that trend, he said, is that the urban centres continue to benefit from commercial and industrial tax bases, while the people who work in the cities make municipal service demands in Durham Region. The Act is intended to permit local municipalities and school boards to raise money to build new schools with added lot levies on new homes. Di Iorio said the Act will, if passed, soon be extend- ed to raise money for hospital con- struction as well. The Development Charges Act is in reality a means for the Pro- vince to escape its own funding responsibilities for these services, Di Iorio said. ple Sclerosis Society ot Cana- | M.S.
