Glenn Jackson, chairman. The last regular service was held April 9, 1989, St. John's has served Brougham community for 98 years. No valid reason was given for this decision. It is alleged that Mrs. Louise Barrie of Uxbridge Township, the non-resident minister of Claremont-Brougham Pastural charge, concurred in this ruling by Oshawa Presbytery. Final decision was taken by Presbytery April 6 in Ajax United Church. A group of members of St. John's congregation went to this meeting to protest this high- handed action but were refused a fair hearing. The 'church building owned since 1972 by the Federal Govern- ment by expropriation for Picker- ing Airport, will remain vacant. The assets of St. John's in- cluding trust fund derived from expropriation have been transfer- red to Claremont Church. In 1973, when Federal goven- ment paid St. John's for the building and land, an agreement was reached with Oshawa Presbytery, whereby St. John's church was to have the use of in- terest for congregational ex- - penses. Any change in status of the principal required the ap- proval of the local congregation. Oshawa Presbytery now refuses to honour this agreement. It is surprising that any church on the fringe of a population ex- plosion should be closed. It is also surprising that any United Church congregation should be topped off with the resulting loss of members after the General Council meeting in August 1988 voted to ordain gay ministers with reported loss of 65,000 to 75,000 members. The Brougham United Church bell will no longer be heard. The Christian presence in Brougham has now been obliterated.
