Ward Two Councillor Marilyn Pearce took the con- cern to Scugog Township Coun- cilon Monday. The refuse is piled against the half-collapsed fence be- tween the laneway beside Beck- ers and the yard of the Rail- roadhouse Motor Hotel. It appears to have resulted from people overfilling the two met- al waste bins, and never pick- ingitup. Ironically, Beckers has supplied the second of the bins to help combat just that prob- lem. Among the assortment of trash are hundreds of junkfood Wrappers, glass, metal, card- board boxes, an old mattress and ironically, a large bio- degradable garbage bag full of garbage. The owner of the plaza, Pe- ter Quan from Markham, has ignored requests from the Star for comment, and has neglected toreturn phone calls. Mr. P. Jamal, owner/ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 2, 1989 -- 3 manager of the Railroadhouse Motor Hotel is not pleased with the situation. He has been forced to contact health officials several times since he took over the hotel in 1987. He said, "my customers who stay on that side of the ho- tel look out their window and notice that junk, they don't like what they see and don't come back. "I've got a boy who comes around and cleans up my lawn. He has to constantly pick up all the garbage that blows from over there." Mr. Jamal would like to see the mess cleaned up and he has offered to split the cost of re- pairing or replacing the fence with the owner. Councillor Pearce has been aware of the problem for some e mess greets tourists time, and has been trying to find a way to have it cleaned up. "It is a shame that the first thing people see coming into Port Perry on 7A, should be this mess," she said. She explained that there is noclear cut solution. "There are several ques- tions to answer regarding who has the ultimate responsibility for the mess. "There is a question of ju- risdiction, who has the power to correct the situation and pre- vent it from recurring," said Councillor Pearce. There is a question of which party is responsible for waste disposal and: grounds maintenance, the owner or the tenants - that depends on the (Turn to page 16) Certificates D.J.
