Port Lakers find Montreal to their liking Port Perry's Scugog Realty Re/Max Lakers hockey club journeyed to Montreal from May 4 to May 7 to participate in a ma- jor tournament which featured 52 teams. Entrants came from all across North America, from as far away as San Diego California. The Montreal tourney, one of many run by Canadian Hockey Enterprises Limited, was far and away the best run, best organiz- ed and most fun of any competi- tion the Lakers have ever been in- volved with in the team's six years together. The facilities, meals and arena were all outstanding. Canadian Hockey Enterprises makes a point of having many former NHL stars in attendance. These former players are com- pletely accessible to tournament participants, including an on-ice session. The Lakers had the priviledge of a one hour practice and scrimmage under the direc- tion of Henri Richard and Gordie Howe. Besides being a lot of fun for the Laker players, Howe and Richard were also able to pick up a few pointers. Other NHL's there included Clarke Gillies, Jean Pronovost, and Vic Hadfield, among others. Best of all, the Lakers signed a new team member, Detroit's former trainer and fixture, "Lef- ty" Wilson. Lefty, who now sports a Port Perry hat, 'adopted' the team, spent many hours with our players off the ice, provided pro- fessional medical assistance for our injuries, and took the time to come to our dressing room before the championship game to offer encouragement and check on in- juries. His stories by themselves made the trip worthwhile. Another highlight of this tourna- ment featured Dennis Hull as guest speaker at the banquet held on the Saturday evening at Le Grande Hotel. Hull, who now teaches at a U.S. college, gave a riotous speech to the 800 participants. After agreeing to speak slowly for the benfit of a team from New- foundland, he spoke on many sub- jects, from his life in hockey in the NHL and playing for Team. Canada against the Russians in 1972, to such subjects as: why he failed to become a minister because of corn flakes; and why there are no seven foot janitors in the U.S.. The standing ovation he received after his speech was totally justified. All games were played at the spectacular arena complex on Montreal's south Shore, Les 4 Glaces. This facility, which is completely privately owned, has 4 ice pads. In the centre of the complex, there is one large, com- fortable, spotless, carpetted room which houses restaurant and bar facilities, and huge glass areas providing a panoramic view of all ice surfaces. The whole complex is efficient- ly run and immaculately main- tained by 72 full-time uniformed staff. The high standards of Les 4 Glaces not only made the hockey more enjoyable, but also "rubbed-off" on the entrants, who respected the opportunity to play in such a fantastic facility. While the Lakers fell behind early, they kept the pressure on, and Carl Fit- zgerald tied the score on a set up While the Lakers dominated, it took an overtime goal from Dave Harrison, assisted by Ken Smart, to finally clinch the victory. Not only was this the best tour- nament the Re/Max team has been in, but in order to win, the team played probably the finest hockey in its history. Peter Nau- mienko was the best goalie in the division, and runner-up among 16 other goalies in the tournament shoot-out contest. Thanks to coaches and managers Doug Bache, John Laskey, Phil McBride and Steve Calder for taking such good care of the team. Also to Don Harper of Scugog Re/Max Realty for sponsoring the team.
