PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May ?, 1989 -- 43 Nurses to buy birthing bed oil by Cathy Olliffe It's spelled "Shampain", but it could easily be spelled the more bubbly way, as in "the champagne of birthing beds." However it's spelled, the nurses of Port Perry's Commu- nity Memorial Hospital want to buyit for the maternity ward. R.N. Gail Verwoud ex- plains, the birthing bed can make labour and delivery a great deal easier for mom. One of the worst parts of giving birth, she said, is going from the admitting bed to a stretcher to the delivery room bed, back to a stretcher and back to a regular . bed again. It's a lot of moving around for a woman undergoing what can be a great deal of discomfort and pain. Nurse Verwoud a process is somewhat es the ike play- ing "musical beds." A birthing bed puts a stop to the music. Women in labour are admit- ted to the birthing bed, which converts to easily to a stretcher, and then wheeled into the deliv- ery room. She has the baby on the bed, which can be moved with the touch of a button to any position the woman finds com- fortable--sitting up, lying down or somewhere in between. When the baby is born, the bed is adjusted and the new mom is wheeled back to her room, where she can stay in the same bed throughout her stay in hos- pital. More and more hospitals are investing in the beds, which cost $12,000 each. Nurse Verwoud said the hos- pital will be buying five of the beds once the new wing is built. But in the meantime, to kick off Nurses Week in Ontario (May 7 to 18), the nurses of Port Perry have initialized their own cam- paign to buy one bed. To start the campaign, the nurses are hosting a craft sale, bake sale and tea room this Sat- urday May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 .m. in_the Anglican Church allin Port Perry. All proceeds will go towards the birthingbed campaign. Nurse Verwoud said the ma- ternity ward at Community Me- morial is popular with mothers because itis so personable. "It's very homey. People will tell you they're more comforta- ble because they like the atmos- phere," she said. The bed, she added, will only add to the "homey" surround- ings. Bev Brown and Gall Verwoud are just two of the nurses at Community' Memorial Hospital who are campaigning to raise money to buy a $12,000 birthing bed for the maternity ward.
