TE $2 -- PORY PERRY STAR T5500 MEY ay 1909 Lions hold flea market Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly On Friday, Anne and Peter Vanderheul, Mrs. Aenne Vanderheul, Cecil and Marie Gib- son, Wayne and Eleanor Mac- Donald, Julia Vanderheul and Duarte Oliveira attended Boyd Vanderheul's graduation from Royal Military College, Kingston. The Convocation Exercises were held on Friday when Boyd graduated with Second Class 'Honours in Engineerng and Management. On Saturday they attended the Graduation Parade. In the evening his parents Anne and Pete Vanderheul and his sister Julia Vanderheul and her fiance Duarte Oliveira enjoyed the Graduation Ball along with Boyd. Congratulations. Boyd con- tinues his studies until February. Several from the area attended the wedding of Lisa Black, daughter of Bev: and Shirley Black formerly from this area to" Karl Weeden of Prince Albert." Debbie Bryans was Matron-of Honour for her sister, Leanna Bryans was flower girl and Gord the M.C. at the reception held at - the Winchester Golf and Country Club. On Sunday Gerald and Joyce Kelly, Elaine and Esther and Sheldon Robertson attended the Ellis Family Reunion at Ops Rec. Centre. Nearly one hundred of Gerald's relatives attended this gathering. Flora Samells, a former stu- dent of L..C.V.1. and her daughter Ann Powell of Orono attended some of the celebrations on Sun- day in Lindsay when L.C.V. celebrated its 100th anniversary. Next weekend on Saturday and Sunday the Lions Club will hold its annual Flea Market from 9-4:30 at the arena. Please support this an- nual venture. Any- donations would be welcome as well as your attendance. Another opportunity to get rid of those white elephants will be the Fair Board auction which will be held on Friday evening, June 2 also at the arena. Donations can be made to Lawrence VanCamp or Doug Grove or any member of the Board. Congratulations to Patti and Rick Alpe on the birth of a baby boy last Wednesday. Blackstock lost one of its very quiet citizens with the sudden passing of Wm. Parr of Sunrise Cres. Friends and neighbours gathered at the home of Ruth Marconi on Tuesday night to honour Julia Vanderheul with a bridal shower. Julia's Maid-of- Honour and future sister-in-law Nelia Oliveira of Toronto assisted her in opening many beautiful gifts for which she graciously thanked everyone. A social time was enjoyed by all over coffee and dessert. There were 13 tables at the weekly card party with the follow- ing winners - Myrtle Gimblett, Mary Cannon, Muriel Butson, Carl Gimblett, Ivan Cochrane, Betsy Staniland and Low - Les Taylor - Draws were won by Olive Ormiston, Ella Venning, Leonard Cane and Clarence Masters. Monday evening dinner guests of Gerald and Joyce Kelly, Elaine and Esther were Gerald's cousin Maureen Baumeister and her daughter Sandra from Richmond, British Columbia and her mother Mrs. Ted Gilmour from Cambray. The May meeting of the Morn- ing Unit of the U.C.W. met at the home of Peggy Larmer on Tues- day May 16. Jean Kyte thanked all who worked so hard to make the Stew Dinner a success. Dorothy Venning reported a pro- fit of $778. Alma Duff gave the devotion on the topic of the Precious Present. The General Meeting of the U.C.W. will be held on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. The Unit will go to Deer Park Inn for lunch and play on June 14. Please meet at the church at 11 a.m. Get well cards were signed. Eleanor Werry gave an in- teresting programme on the Family Bible. Most families had a large family Bible in which were recorded the births, deaths and marriages of family members. Jean closed the meeting and a lot of "Good Old Visiting" took place, bringing a good morning of fellowship to a close. There were over 1500 4-H members present, who enjoyed a day of fun and education. The day consisted of award presentations, displays and ex- hibits. Some of the displays con- sisted of sheep shearing, carding, spinning, and weaving wool, which all were discussed during the 4-H project. Other displays in- cluded the "incredible" cedar log splitting, sheep dogging, and ladies cooking in an old fashion- ed style. We visited a blacksmith's shop, a tool shop, and an old fashioned gas station which had a very large snowmobile from 1926. There are many permanent displays set up at the museum throughout the season. The Threshing Machine Barn il- lustrates the evolution of the On 600-1800-1900 1Series Lawn & 1 Garden Tractors threshing machine with numerous types on display. The Dairy Display depicts the development of dairying in On- tario. The Apple Industry Display depicts the history and evolution of Ontario's apple industry. This exhibit includes early equipment once used in the Herrgott- Lobsinger apple cider and butter in Mildmay which is a highlight of this exhibit. The Templin Car- riage Works portrays a company which manufactured fanning mills and wagons in Fergus, cir- ca 1910. A working wheelwright shop is featured, The Groyer- Fraser Barn, an unusual eight- sided barn, houses a collection of early equipment manufactured by the International Harvester - Company. The Elliot-Harrop Barn, built in 1882, is a large barn displaying early Ontario farm machinery manufacturers. Eighty-five members from Durham West completed this: project. 'The six project awards went to Melanie Norton (Wilfrid), and Teena Gagnon (Gamebridge). The twelve pro- ject awards went to Lorna Dur- ward (Brock), Kelly Hider (Can- nington), and Lee-Ann Drapak (Oshawa). Youth Leaders for this project were Kelly Hider of Canningtbn and Carolyn Clark of Uxbridge. Five Year Leader Certificates were earned by Bev Fisher (Beaverton), and Cathy Anderson (Bethesda). i" Despite the cold weather, everyone, who attended, thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
