Instead, she will face a panel "of tough, international judges who will listen to Leanne give a lecture (up to an hour and a half long), and who will mark the presentation as if it were a uni- versity thesis. Her competitors, from 68 countries around the world, will range in age from 16 to 26. Win- ning in London won't be easy, but then the Canadian competi- tion wasn't a piece of cake ei- ther. "Just by being in London, win or lose, fori will be in the company of the world's bright- est young scientific minds. As well as the all-expense paid trip to London, and a shiny 1d medal, Leanne also won a $500 cash award sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company. Held at a univesity in St. John's, Newfoundland, the Canada Wide Science Fair was a gruelling week, and Leanne says she didn't get alot of sleep. 7 y/ The awards ceremony, a mar- athon that lasted more than seven hours, was held Thurs- day May 18. Nervously she sat through the proceedings, think- ing, at best, she might win an honourable mention. "When I didn't get called for an honourable mention, I tried to resign myself to not winning anything," she said. While trying to swallow her disappointment, her name was called as the gold medal winner, - The time was 11:40 p.m. and while she didn't scream then, "I screamed after! I had this stu- pid smile on my face for th days after, I think!" : - Her parents had flown to Newfoundland to see the awards ceremony, so she didn't have to call them with the news, but she did call her aunt, who called her grandmother, who in turn called the Port Perry Star Friday morning with the excit- ing hews. Leanne arrived back home on Sunday, exhausted, but happy. Again being modest, Leanne Honeymoon Draw! "It's the best year Durham Region has ever had," she said. "Everyone won who went from Durham and that's the most im- poratant thin v." Other Durham students who competed at the Canada Wide Science Fair won two honoura- ble mentions and a silver medal (they're not from Port Perry). But the gold was reserved for Leanne. Over the last three years, her face has become familiar to reg- ular Star readers. Three years in a row she claimed first prize at the Durham Regional Sci- ence Fair. And she's been to the Canada Wide competition three times as well. Last year she brought home abronze medal. As for this year, well, her sto- ry isn't over yet. Chances are we'll be seeing more of this in- telligent young woman when she comes home from London. And knowing Leanne, we won't be altogether surprised if she comes home victorious.
