That was essentially the message from Sharon Creel- man who was the guest speaker at the annual Port Perry High School Athletics Awards Night May 24. Ms. Creelman, a student at York University, is a member of Canada's national field hockey team. Twice, she has represented Canada at Olympic Games in Los Angelas in 1984 when the team finished 5th, and last fall in Seoul when the team placed 6th. She was also a member of the team that finished second in the 1986 world championships. Acknowledging that ath- letes these days are under tre- mendous pressure to win, she told the audience of students and faculty that success does not have to be measured in terms of medals and victories. Achieving our personal goals can be equally as impor- tant, she stated. At one pointin her address, she referred to "chemical war- fare" in the world of athletics, and stated bluntly "steroids are dangerous. To think otherwise is foolish." She called use of steroids a "cop-out," and in reference to the Dubin Inquiry now under- way, said it is good this kind of information is being brought out into the open. Ms. Creelman related a conversation she had at the Seoul Olympics with a member of Canadian pole vaulting team. When she asked him about his chances he replied "I'll be lucky to advance past the first round of competition." This answer surprised her, she stated, because her attitude was to always go into a competi- ton thinking she would win. "But just to be able to com- pete at the Games was a great victory," she said. Ms. Creelman has been a member of Canadian Field Hockey team for seven years. She is also a member of FAME (female athletes promot- ing excellence) a program spon- sored by the provincial ministry of culture and recreation. Through this program, ath- letes like Ms. Creelman, are able to speak at functions like high school awards nights. The remainder of the eve- ning was devoted to presenta- tions for MVPs from the various teams at Port Perry HS. And there were some spe- cial presentations to three fa- culty who are retiring at the end of the school term. Stan LeFort was associated with the school golf team, Ber- nie London has coached the archery team, and Gerry Cole has coached just about every- thing over the last 32 years. He's the head of phys ed at the school, and he received a handsome baromoter-clock as a token of appreciation for all his work in high school sports for more than 30 years in Port Perry.
