22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 6, 1989 Brock West Landfill site will electrify Brock area Methane gas from a landfill site in Pickering will be used to pro- duce electricity for sale, Ontario Hydro announced recently. Hydro has signed an agreement to purchase electricity from a 21 megawatt generating plant being built by Eastern Power Developers Inc. at the Brock West landfill site, said Paul Vyrostko, Hydro's Director of Non-Utility Generation. "This agreement will help On- tario Hydro meet its objective of purchasing 1,000 megawatts of electricity from private developers by the year 2000. Hydro is committed to encourag- ing independent generators to develop alternate energy sources in an environmentally responsible manner. This project will use new technology that will turn the gas from a garbage disposal site into useful electricity," Vyrostko said. Eastern Power Developers, a - totally Canadian company, plans to burn the gas from the landfill site to produce steam to drive a turbine and produce electricity. The gas, mainly made up of methane and carbon dioxide, is currently collected by the Metro Toronto Works Department in a system of pipes and burned off in flares to ensure safety and reduce odors. "This will be the first landfill gas fuelled electrical generating plant in Canada," said Herman Walter, President of Eastern Power Developers. 'This power plant will improve local air quali- ty and generate enough electrici- ty to meet the needs of about 6.000 homes." Metro Toronto and Pickering will receive approximately $14 million in royalties over 10 years from Eastern Power Developers. Eastern Power Developers plans to have the plant operating and providing electricity to On- tario Hydro by the end of 1990. Sam Cureatz bill gives kids access fo parents'pensions Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. for Durham East, has introduced in the Ontario Legislature a Private Member's Bill to amend the Teacher's Superannuation Act to allow the child of a deceased con- tributor to receive his or her parent's pensjon if the whereabouts of the contributor's spouse is unknown. © Cureatz says currently, if a con- tributor dies, his pension is paid to the surviving spouse. However, in some cases, it cannot be deter- mined whether that person is dead. In this instance, the children of the contributor cannot access the pension. "There are cases our there, some in the Oshawa area, where people cannot receive one parent's pension because they don't know where to find the other parent," said Cureatz. *"I'hey've been waiting for the Liberals to introduce this kind of Legislation for too long -- it's time that something was done to cor- rect the situation." Donut Press raises money for Hospital In this calorie-conscious age, most folks feel a little guilty about doughnuts. What we all need is an excuse to pop a few of the sweet mor- sels, and the Donut Press in Port Perry is now providing just such an excuse. Paul Papanikolopoulos, own- er of the Water Street shop (at the corner of Highway 7A) has introduced a scheme that will allow everyone to eat as many doughnuts as they want--and help the hospital at the same time. On the first Tuesday of every month from now until Decem- ber, Paul will tally all his sales at the shop and donate 25% of that figure to the Community Memorial Hospital building fund. The "Tuesday" campaign starts at 11 p.m. Monday and finishes 11 p.m. Tuesday. That's 24 hours each and every month to enjoy doughnuts with- outguilt. Building fund campaign chairman Jerry Taylor was thrilled when he heard about the idea--and even more thrilled when he and Paul had a chance to share in the dough- nuts of their choice. Paul chose the old stand-by, chocolate-glazed, while Scu- gog's former mayor opted for a double chocolate.
