The Port Perry Auto Glass Sting Rays nipped Pete's Mum- blees 5-4 Sunday afternoon to take the championship and pocket $500 in travelling ex- penses. The Sting Rays sported a perfect 5-0 record through this tournament, and for a while in the championship game, it looked as though the Mumblees were going to emerge as the winners. They jumped into an early 4-0 lead, and then settled down to play near perfect defense through the middle innings. The Sting Rays got one run back in the fifth inning, were blanked in the sixth, but in the home half of the seventh, they finally got the old bats working to score four runs. After knotting the score at 4-4, the Sting Rays had runners at second and third, and then an intentional walk loaded the bas- es for Keijo Kinnunen. He lofted a fly ball to right field and that was enough to score the winning run from third base. This was a very well played game with both teams sharp on defense. The Sting Rays turned a couple of classic double plays. The high sun and the swirl- ing winds blowing to the out- field fences gave the players a bit of trouble. x x spot In fact, in the bottom of the seventh, the sun may have been a factor in the outcome as the Mumblees third baseman lost a routine pop foul in the glare and the ball bounced harmlessly at his feet. " Brian Norton went the dis- tance on the mound for the Sting Rays, and was awarded a new glove courtesy of Sports- land as tournament MVP. In the Consolation final, "the Uxbridge Bull Dogs had an easy time over Oshawa MCL Hornets as they played near perfect defense and really turned on the scoring jets to romp to aone-sided victory. Sixteen teams, ten of them from the Port Perry area, start- ed the tournament Friday night, with the consolation and championship game ending Sunday afternoon. For the first time in this popular tournament which is hosted by the Gators slo pitch squad, the top three teams qual- ified for the Coors Slo Pitch championship event to be held in Niagara Falls this Septem- ber.
