Too many | children killed on the farm by Marlene Werry, Rural Organization Specialist It would be socially unaccep- table (and probably against the law) for our friends and neighbours, who work in factories or on construction sites, to take their children to work with them. Why then do we tolerate this practice in agriculture? Com- ments like, "She grew up around those cows" or '"He knows not to go near that hole or machine" are common, but are they full of com- mon sense? Under normal conditions, most farm children do have some respect for the danger repeated- ly enforced by their mom or dad. It's when conditions are not nor- mal that we all get into trouble. In 1988, nearly '% of all farm fatalities involved children 15 years of age and under. Using the farm workplace as a playground can have tragic results. In the last 10 years, nearly % of all children killed were under 5% years old. A study conducted by the U.S. based Successful Farming magazine revealed that 65 per- cent of farm boys are operating a tractor by themselves at 10-12 years old. And almost 30 percent The mpm Central Senior Public School Concert Band, with 39 members, has had a busy and successful year. Under the direction of John Beirness, the band recent- ly gave two concerts at a school in Kingston and then trav- elled on to Montreal to give a concert at "The Study," a pri- vate girls school in Westmount. And the members were able to enjoy many of the sights of Montreal between concerts. are tractor drivers at 7-9 years old. That's despite the fact that 42-47 percent of the parents feel that allowing the child to operate the tractor involves a moderate to high risk. No one intends to i injure or kill their children, yet the deaths and suffering continue. Why do we have this double standard? Is it 'economic necessity? Do we real- 4 ly believe it could never happen to us? Children will forgive you for being stern far quicker than you would forgive yourself if something happened. Think about what grieving parents would do differently if they had a chance? On-Farm Child Care is now available in Durham West and surrounding townships. Don't let your child become a farm fatality.
