I do not know his name; I only know he heard God's voice and came. Brought all he loved across the sea, And came to work for God and me: : He felled the ungracious oak, Dragged from the soil With horrid toil The thrice gnarled root and stubborn rock, With plenty piled the mountain side; And then, at length, without memorial died. No pealing trumpet thundered forth his fame, He lived, he died. I do not know his name. Edward Everett Hale The poem above is reprinted from the frontispiece of Samuel Farmer's wonderful book, 'On The Shores of Scugog," which chronicles the founding and development of the town of Port Perry and its surrounding communities. In a celebration of this pioneer- ing spirit, the Scugog Shores - Museum will once again be holding its annual "Pioneer Days: festival on the anniver- sary of our country's birth, July 1st and 2nd. Pioneer Days is designed to be a weekend extravaganza for the whole family. Dozens of par- ticipants and craftspeople con- verge upon the museum grounds to demonstrate forgotten arts, sell homemade and handcrafted goods, and entertain the visiting 'public. : "This year there will be demonstations of harness- making, basket weaving, chair cdning, candle-making, blacksmithing and shoe-making, to name just a few. The Beef Ring, which sits idle for most of the year, will be call- ed into service once more as but- chers carry out their traditional trade. (Some of the best and freshest steaks and roasts in town. will be raffled off to the public throughout the weekend!) If you've ever wanted to watch a sheep-shearer at work, sample homemade ice cream or buy a bar of handmade soap, then Pioneer Days is for you. The Royal Canadian Legion will be sponsoring an old-time horseshoe- pitching contest for those of you with a competitive bent, and there will be games and entertainment for the children. The barn will come to life with the sounds and sights of a coun- try hoe-down, with singers, dancers and musicians. The kit- chen of our mid-19th century far- mhouse will be filled with the aroma of homemade bread, and freshly-baked loaves will be available for purchase. Don't forget to bring your knives and tools to be sharpened by the Village knife-grinder. There is no charge for this service, only a small donation of you choosing. Finally, to preserve the memory of your step back into history, you can have your photograph taken in period costume! Pioneer Days will begin at noon on Saturday, July 1st, with a Special flag raising ceremony and playing of our national an- them by the Kawartha Brass. The 'festival runs from noon to 5:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sun- day, so make plans now to come out and share in the celebration of our pioneering heritage.
