Ea il aa, En "18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tueiday) Juhe 13,1989 The Millar Lites are com- ing to town, and do they have a show for you. "Standing Room Only," a lively mixture of music and comedy will open June 23 at Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry for three performances. There will be music from Vaudeville, scenes from such well known productions as Les Miserables, Cats, Phantom of the Opera and the Wizard of Oz, plus a whole series of impromp- tu "commercial breaks" that will leave you laughing. So, who are the Millar Lites? A group of nearly 30 young people from Scugog Township ages nine to 16 who all share a common interest: they love to sing, dance, act and entertain. The name is an affectionate reference to Dr. Tom Millar, the man who put this childrens theatre group together several months ago, and has devoted .countless hours in rehearsal over the last few months pre- paring for "Standing Room Only." For some of the young peo- ple in the group, the show later this month will be their first time on stage, while others are "seasoned veterans" from such recent Choral Society produc- tions as The Sound of Music, Ol- iver and the Countess Maritza." Although Dr. Millar (known to the kids-as Dr. Tom) has had it in the back of his B DESIGN & S Ly. Studio mind for some time to form a childrens theatre group in Port Perry, the Millar Lites really got off the ground when the Choral Society called auditions for Sound of Music. About 70 children showed up for the auditions. But there were just seven parts. Seeing so much enthu- siasm and talent, the decision was made then and there to form a group and start working on a production. "I'mvery happy with the re- sponse from the kids. It's been great. They are so enthusias- tic," he told the Star Sunday morning during a rehearsal at the Town Hall 1873. "And besides," he said with a huge grin on his face, "I can yell at them and not worry about bruised egos." Besides Dr. Millar, these young people are getting direc- tion from some well known indi- viduals in Port Perry theatre. Katherine Millar is work- ing with them on vocals; Nina Foxall is executive and stage di- rector; Jenny Gushue is work- ing on the choreography, Lynn Relf is directing the Wizard of Oz segment, and the whole show is being produced by Rich- ard Drew. There are no "lead roles" as such in this production of Standing Room Only. ' The idea is to give as many of the young people as much time on stage as possible.
