June 4 to 10. was National 88 Awareness Week in Canada. Communities across the nation took the opportunity to examine how effectively dis- abled persons are being inte- - grated into the community and what can be done toimprove that process. Representatives of local groups which work with the dis- abled, several parents of chal- lenged children, a member of the Scugog Chamber of Com- merce, and Township council: lorsmet in an open forum to ex- 'chi ideas' and develop possiblegoals. Mrs. Spofford was upset last Christmas when Santa Claus was moved from the Latcham Centre to the Port Perry United Church. The part of the church where Santa sat forced the Spoffords to travel several Rights of stairs and created a lot of difficulty for them. Mrs. Spofford asked that since seven-year-old 'Sherry stills believes in Santa, it would be nice if she were able to visit with him this year. Among the items discussed was the location of two new Handicapped parking spots on Queen Street. Participants in the discussion s sted that one spot near the I.G.A. and one near the post office might be helpful. The problem will come in policing the spots to actually al- low the handicapped users to park there. It is unrealistic to expect that businesses will undergo major physical alterations but it was suggested that little efforts such as being available to assist atrons by holding doors and helping lift strollers and wheel- chairs would be appreciated. One aspect of access awareness which was stressed was the great need for public education. If people know what the barriers and problems are, they will be better pre- pared toremove them in all are- as including transportation, housing, employment and rec- reation, With an aging and grow- ing population, a larger num- r of mature or challenged shoppers can be expected to come to the downtown, anyim- provements made to assist them. in getting about will be appreciated and should add to the appeal of shopping and liv- ingin Port Perry.
