Frank Bye is nothing but in- spirational. At 80 years old, Mr. Bye is every bit a gentleman and a scholar, a fine-mannered trans- planted Englishman who en- Joys nothing better than sitting down and writing poetry in a handwriting so precise, it re- sembles calligraphy. - He wrote the poem above in 1987, and while he penned it with someone else in mind, it easily applies to the poet him- self. Mr. Bye and his pretty wife Elsie moved to their well-kept home just a few miles northeast of Nestleton last October. Be- fore that, they lived in Whitby and Picton, where Mr. Bye was a regular contributor of poems to the Picton Gazette. In Whitby, he contributed regularly to the Whitby Seniors' "Activity Centre newsletter. In June last year the centre pub- lished his "The Sunshine in a > Smile": So dull the dismal scene, so dimthe cheerless day, The sunshine needed now, to clear the gloom away, And soon came welcome brightness, shining tenderly, A pleasant warmth, a tran- quilcharm, as pure serenity. At first it shone so softly, with gentleness awhile, And then in all its splendour, the sunshinein a smile. Before Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Bye called England their home, where Mr. Bye worked for more than 47 years on the railway as a personnel manager. It was because of his out- standing service to the railway industry that he was presented with a Membership of the Brit- ish Empire on January 1, 1968. He and his family were called to Buckingham Palace where Mr. Bye met the Queen and re- vey a striking medal of hon- our (similar to the Order of Can- ada). He also received a medal as a "Serving Brother of the Order of St. John" for encouraging peo- le to know more about the St. 5 ohn Ambulance organization. And although he wrote his first poem as a schoolboy, he didn't write again until he came to Canada. In Picton, he submitted a poem, that included all the street names in the town , to the Picton Gazette. "This encouraged me to keep writing," and in fact, the news- paper continued to print many of his poems. Just settling into this area, the Byes are already busying themselves with church activi- ties (they credit Community Care with helping them get around), but Mr. Bye still finds time to write.
