RE BF 3ouh EMIT -- SATS YRRIY THOR = Atlantic salmon stocked in Lake Ontario by MNR Ina continuing project to re- introduce Atlantic salon to Lake Ontario, 63,000 Atlantic salmon smolts have been stocked in the Credit River and Wilmot Creek by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This second year of stocking took place during the last week-of April and first week of May, 1989. The fish are now doing well and making their way downstream to Hake Ontario. e Atlantic salmon smolts, weighing approximately 50-60 grams (2 ounces), are expected to grow to a size of 3.5 to 9 kilograms' (8 to 20 pounds) in size before returning to their home rivers to : spawn in the early 1990's. During this vulnerable time of re-introduction, to ensure the fish Kari survive to begin spawning, the Atlantic salmon are assisted by very restrictive fishing regula- tions. All fishing for Atlantic salmon smolts is prohibited by the Fisheries Act of Canada. Once these fish do reach a legal cat- chable size in Lake Ontario, fishermen are restricted to daily catch and possession limits of one fish only. Despite this allowable catch and possession limit, the Ministry of Natural Resources is recom- mending that anglers catching an Atlantic salmon immediately return the fish alive to the water to allow it to spawn and reproduce naturally. Conservation officers are con- ducting intensive patrols of the Credit River and Wilmot Creek to sme ensure that anglers obey the fishing regulations. Fifteen peo- ple were recently charged with unlawfully fishing for and possessing overlimits of Atlantic salmon. The maximum penalty under the Fisheries Act for these . offences is a $5,000.00 fine and/or 6 months in jail and includes forfeiture of any equipment used to catch or transport these fish. Conservation officers are also advising anglers to learn the iden- tification features of salmon and trout before setting out on a fishing trip. This will enable fishermen to avoid mistaking Atlantic salmon for other species of trout and salmon found in these rivers. Atlantic salmon are similar in shape to Pacific salmon but have a white mouth; dark fins-and cross shaped markings on their sides. Smolts have recognizable large black spots on the gill covers. Most often confused with. brown trout, Atlantic salmon can be distinguished by counting anal ; fin rays. Brown trout have 9 anal; fin rays while Atlantic salmon: - have 11. : Anglers in doubt should refer to! | - the Ontario Sport Fishing Regula- : . tions pamphlet available: where: fishing licences are sold.
