PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 13, 1989 -- 43 | Celebrating 40 ! years of serving Port Perry This Is. where it all began 40 years ago when Merlin Dowson first opened his food store on Queen Street. The above pho- to was taken in the early 1960's (check the prices) while the photo below shows the same shop before 1949 when it was , a harness store. The Dowson familly is still in the food busi- ness at Valu-mart in the Port Perry Plaza. Tradition, continuity, an emphasis on personal service. These are some of the ideals ... that are part of the identity of any community. And In Port Perry, the Dowson name has . been associated with the grocery business for four decades. It was In the late spring of 949 when Merlin Dowson first opened their own food store on Queen Street, in the loca- .tlon of the present Creative Basket shop. The name became Red and White and recently Valu-mart at the Port Perry Plaza on Highway 7A. As the community grew and changed over the years, Dowson's kept pace with the changes, moving to a larger store in the plaza in 1975. But the traditions that began with this family business are just important today as they weré 40 years ago when Merlin first opened his store. Pictured above are members of the family who continue to play an active role in the operation and management of Valu- mart.
